By unpopular demand, there was entirely too much Radiohead in that list. Ugh, the thought of the angst created by "Creep" is already starting to give me a headache.
I agree that Trail of Dead's Source Tags and Codes is the perfect album, but I had no idea that gave so few 10's to other ones. But, there are some great albums on there. I would think there would be more, but I usually agree with the pitchfork reviews.

there is no hip hop on that list because HIP HOP FUCKING SUCKS. end of story.
It's funny, I thought Madvillain would be on there. Guess not.
Edit: I've not heard the whole album...it's just that everyone seemed to be jacking off in reviews of it. I would get it but it's stupidly expensive everywhere I've looked.

There do seem to be some selections there to just try to prove indie cred.
In particular, who the fuck are the 12 Rods?
That was in the heady, early days of Pitchfork. Cut 'em some slack, they were new.
Take a look at some excerpts from their 9.8 Odelay review:
Odelay is the third best record of 1996 so far (Walt Mink's El Producto, and 12 Rods' Gay? follow, respectively, if you had to know), and as you all know, there can only be one of those.
[Editor's Note, September 23rd, 2002: You gotta start somewhere! Oh, and I recant that bit about the best records of 1996.]
There's great country music. It's just not the crap they play now, usually. I don't care what anyone says, that last Loretta Lynn album was really good. I guess that's semi-okay because of Jack White's involvement though.

I love a lot of country. But that's still a funny comic.
The thing about the flaming lips record is that if you don't have 4 cd players to play it, you shouldn't be reviewing it. If I only had a record player and gave every album that came to me on cd a 0.0, that would be absurd. Why not have someone who enjoys concepts like that give it a more objective review (if such a thing is possible)?
Alive! is the perfect embodiment of live, lunkhead arena rock. It fires on all cylinders, and I love it for the fact that the guys in KISS were absolutely shameless in their cock-rocking.
KISS: Alive! absolutely deserves a 10, for doing exactly what it sets out to do so perfectly.

It was the concept that he objected to. It's pretentious enough for bands to release vinyl-only singles, but an album that requires four cd players? That's just ricockulous. And this is from someone who owns is.
That Coltrane record is not very good, even for the really out-there later stuff. He was sick with liver cancer, I think he'd become jaundiced by then, but since Pitchfork decided to get off their lazy asses and occasionally review a jazz record that isn't Vandermark, it automatically gets a 10? I can't tell if the staff writers are completely lacking in heart or are blinded by it, but come on, idolatry is just insulting to your idols.
