From "What is Pub Rock?" to "What is Punk?" and now on to "What is Emo?"

This page is tagged "People Who Like Emo are Still People":

If someone has sent you the link to this page, then it's most likely because you are one of the many netizens who doesn't know what emo is and more importantly, thinks they do. The emo people are one of the most discriminated against online, causing us to retreat to our live journals and myspace in fear...

The material is cribbed from this page, with mp3s added, "so you can HEAR the difference between what is actually emo and what your stupid ass thinks it is."

I admit, my stupid ass doesn't care all that much, but I did like this Q and A from the "what the heck is emo" page's feedback section:

"this guy goes way to far trying to scrutinize, overanalyze, and just basically suck all life out of the music, if anyone wants to laugh, or maybe even cry, go check out the page. "

"wow,i think you really out did yourself kid,i think you single handedly sucked all fun out of the music, with that over analytical "description," of what im not sure though."

If you think that analysis sucks the fun and life out of things, maybe it's time to stop reading Thomas Aquinas and those romantic poets and come to grips with the last few centuries.

They'll take my Thomas Aquinas when they pry him out of my cold, dead hands...

This page has been around for a while, and it is absolutely, positively, the best documentation/explanation of what emo is/was. Two thumbs up.

Viva la emo.
Viva la fourfa dot com.

Still more webpage-wrought proof that Yellowcard is not so much "emo" as "concentrated suckage."

They're kind of too techo to be full-fledged emo, but it's definitely a natural progression. They are half of Death Cab for Cutie, after all, and DCFC fall squarely in the "post-emo indie rock" branch of emo.

(Also, Postal Service came about after the fourfa site was made. It hasn't been updated in what seems like ages.)

I think they definitely fall under the "post-emo indie rock" category.

When are people gonna stop listening to categories and start listening to music? (This of course doesn't include Country, 'cause that just not music.)

Oh fuck... that page is part of the Mesa Verde website... they're a 'local' emo band, here in Glasgow, Scotland. I've not heard them myself, though I've been told their stuff is okay. Some of the band hang out on a local web forum I moderate, and they come across as the kinda guys who're eager to remind you that you're not as 'independent' as they are, and that you're supporting the man each time you listen to a popular band.

Still, good on them for getting off their arses and practicing what they preach, whether I agree with any of it or not.

Here in Glasgow, they supported Audioslave last week. Does that provide the missing link between faux-emo and grunge that I've long-suspected most emo-defining kids of missing in a 'not seeing the wood for the trees' fashion?

Why even call it "music", really? It's so confining. Isn't it really the merging of the collective self-conscious to bring us to a... oh, nevermind.

Emo/Screamo = rich-kid-bitch-boy-music

Rock..yep
Rap..uh huh
Country..hmm
Jazz..check
Classical..roger that
Blues..still there

Emo...complete fucking rubbish.

If you're honestly putting your heart and soul into the music (as you should be)....when is it not emotional?

These "genres" are spiraling inward and are starting to have no meaning what so ever. Which is why I put down "labels" a long time ago. Although, that is how they've trained us in school all our lives..to put things in catagories...I've decided that these ridiculous labels are only necessary to help the media to keep up with it.

...but these kids making this crap have not had their hearts broken no worse than any of us. 90% or all of them have not even had a full life yet so how could they possibly know what real heartache or a hard life even feels like?!....they're in a band...traveling the world...what the fuck do they have to whine about?!?...how many hit records can they record about a girl they barely knew? ..what will happen when they learn they can't sing about the same girl more than twice?...Thats a promising career, I mean to tell ya.

puke Hawthorne Heights, Senses Fail..etc, etc, all of the above mad ....I wonder what band-wagon their fans will jump onto next. I will be laughing hysterically when it's all over.

..find a new name or make different music you pansies.

p.s. I'm a stubborn asshole.
