no recommendations really but I do really love the Solaris soundtrack. Check out Boards of Canada if you haven't already. Not quite the same but good. Craig Armstrong is a really good composer as well.

A few movies he did.
Best Laid Plans
Plunkett & Macleane
The Bone Collector
plus his own albums
The Space Between Us
As If To Nothing
and he does the strings for Massive Attack

Yeah, I read that Flea from the Chili Peppers played on one of the soundtracks; I think it was Narc?

I myself find the Chili Peppers kind of annoying, but they obviously know what they're doing, heh.

They are only annoying because they let Keidis write too many songs. Flea and Frusciante are brilliant players.

Martinez IMHO is perhaps one of the most exciting and groundbreaking composers of film music since Ennio Morricone....and if you know me...you know how utterly flawless I feel Morricone is....
I think you might really enjoy some of the work by:
Harry Partch
and I would suggest you get to know the Tzadik label ( John Zorn's label) because many of the releases would be very much up your alley.....

The Chili Peppers were good in the 80's.

And may I suggest the soundtrack to Vampiros Lesbos.
A very lovely and strange soundtrack.

I agree. Mothers Milk was the last decent album they did. And that wasn't even that good. What ever happened to Fishbone?

Hey Norwood and Angelo from Fishbone are my good pals! They are still touring around and making cool music. Angelo has been doing this soul/circus/gospel/jazz stuff that is amazing and he plays every instrument on it- and is obsessed with playing drums now- a lead singer that really wants to be a drummer- haha! Sometimes - once in a blue moon I do shows with Norwood or Angelo. And they do shows around LA with Trulio Disgracious a few times a year.

Edited to say that I thought Mother's Milk was a piece of shit - but the first 3 albums were fucking great. And that John Fruciante's solo stuff is truly amazing.
