"Strange Fruit" - Josh White

That's even sadder in original form by Billie Holiday

I'll have to check that out.

Check out the version by Nina Simone, too.

I found the versions by both Billie Holiday and NIna Simone and they were both very good. But I think I like the Josh White version better.

Hat tip to Stosbet and ElysianZero for pointing these out to me.

Well, then I'll have to check out his version too wink

Some more.

Against All Odds - Phil Collins
Now Those Days Are Gone - Bucks Fizz
Winter's tale - David Essex
The Last Resort - The Eagles
Sweet Dreams - Patsy Cline
I Fall To Pieces - Patsy Cline
Big River - Jimmy Nail
Song For Guy - Elton John
The Last Song - Elton John
Nimbus - Elgar: especially when it's played on brass.
It Was So Easy Then - Carly Simon
First Of May - The Bee Gees
Please Tell Him That I Said Hello - Dana
Since You Stayed Here - Michael Crawford

Sometimes a particular line in a song, hits a nerve; is that familiar to anyone else?
There's one in the Bucks Fizz song, which is mostly a four part harmony, where a single voice sings sings "I just can't stand the thought... of life without you" - and it always gets to me.
I'm going to start checking all of these songs out, and make myself really miserable. wink

I think quite often they way we hear something the first time, especially if it really moves us, is often the one that stands out as "The Best" in our memory.

For me, I heard Billie's version when I was around 7 years old and feel like I could cry every time I've heard it since then. In fact, Billie gives me goosebumps every time I hear her sing ANYTHING.blush

I have to agree... When I heard Billie's, I liked it, however I didn't feel the intense emotion I did when I heard Nina's version.

It's the SONG itself that's so powerful. However, whoever we hear it from first is what gives it it's lasting impression, making us partial to that particular artist.

Everyone know the saddest songs ever written are:

1. Seasons in the Sun
2. Billy Don't be a Hero
and
3. Wildfire

Ebony and Ivory will also make you cry, but for different reasons.

Ben Folds: "Fred Jones, Part 2":

"There was no party, there were no songs
'Cause today's just a day like the day that he started
...
He's forgotten but not yet gone
And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones
It's time"
