The magazine The Believer will be releasing a compilation album which is to be packaged with their June issue of the magazine.

The bands involved were asked the question, "what are you currently listening to?" and whatever their answer was, is the song they are probably covering.

The tracklisting is as follows:

  • 01 The Decemberists: "Bridges & Balloons" by Joanna Newsom
  • 02 Spoon: "Decora" by Yo La Tengo
  • 03 The Constantines: "Why I Didn't Like August '93" by Elevator
  • 04 CocoRosie: "Ohio" by Damien Jurado
  • 05 The Mountain Goats: "Pet Politics" by Silver Jews
  • 06 San Serac: "Late Blues" by Ida
  • 07 The Shins: "We Will Become Silhouettes" by the Postal Service
  • 08 Josephine Foster: "The Golden Window" by the Cherry Blossoms
  • 09 Cynthia G. Mason: "Surprise, AZ" by Richard Buckner
  • 10 Jim Guthrie: "Nighttime/Anytime (It's Alright)" by the Constantines
  • 11 Espers: "Firefly Refrain" by Fursaxa
  • 12 Two Gallants: "Anna's Sweater" by Blear
  • 13 Vetiver: "Be Kind to Me" by Michael Hurley
  • 14 Ida: "My Fair, My Dark" by David Schickele
  • 15 Mount Eerie: "Waterfalls" by Thanksgiving
  • 16 Devendra Banhart: "Fistful of Love" by Antony & the Johnsons

Believer is one of the best magazines out there and this looks to be a great comp. Can't wait for this issue.

Ida is still together? That's good to know.
But I wish they would have included their cover of "O Caroline" by Matching Mole...or "Golden Hours" by Brian Eno. Damn, Ida does some good covers...

It's mostly earnestly non-wretched book reviews, but they also occasionally review movies and music. the essays are long, and they often tie into geopolitical situations in one way or another.

The Believer is a brilliant literary magazine. I absolutely loved their Visual Issue (and the accompanying DVD). Subscribing to that (and McSweeneys) is money well spent.

This comp sounds awesome.

Oh, those McSweeney's kids. The radness of their projects knows no bounds.

According to their site, you can get it at John Sandoe Books, or Foyle’s Bookstore, both in London. I'm not sure about in the UK, but in the states I've also seen back issues at better used bookstores.

OK, I am officially old and/or uncool because of all those bands I have only ever heard of the Constantines.

And I was so hip back in 1991 frown

The Believer avoids much of the snarkiness and post-grad smartassery that occasionally mars McSweeney's, so I find it a far better read.
