I just finished watching, "Gigantic", the documentary on They Might Be Giants, and I'm quite impressed, and surprised; I had no idea how much of a landmark they made in the realm of Independent music.

I remember them well from junior high school days - I even lip-synced to "Particle Man" (I was Universe Man - it was one of the most humiliating moments of my young life, in retrospect). I enjoyed them, but not nearly as much my geeky friends did. Anyone I knew who owned a home computer in the late 80's, played in the school marching band, or had seen "Rocky Horror Picture Show" more than once - this was their favorite band.

So - anyone here like them?

I saw them first beack i the mid-eighties. It was one of the best shows I'd ever seen. They played my college in the early 90's and people were moshing and I kinda lost interest. I saw them again a few years ago at the fillmore and for the first time, I felt really old because I was experiencing pure nostalgia for the first time.

I'm impressed that they still have the dial a song going.

Saw them 4 years or so back.... very cool show. They were having fun raggin on the stoners in the back row... dunno what those guys were smoking, but it was HARSH. Kinda hard to get a secondhand buzz off smoke in an open-air venue... but damned if this shit wasn't doing it! The band was starting to look a little glassy-eyes by the show's end even... biggrin

Even back then, "Yoru Racist Friend" struck me as a huge departure for them. Serious sugject matter, and what seem like an actual personal expereince for one of them. And the message is so well-spoken. And the guitar riff in the bridge is SWEET. A great song.

I liked them enough that I should probably own some of their music.

I think igor likes them a lot and even manages a band that has a kind of similar thing going on.

Hell yes! TMBG rules, and the DVD is awesome.

I dont think there could ever be a Best Of... album for them. It would just have to be their whole catalog. 'She's an Angel' always comes to mind for my favorite song by them though, along with 'Night Gown of the Sullen Moon'. biggrin

Get their early albums, they're brilliant. Later on, they kinda fall off.

You're telling me that "Ana Ng" and "Don't Let's Start" and "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head" don't fucking rock?

They might be, but they're not. I just don't get what the big deal is. A bunch of my friends think it's blasphemy that I don't worship them. I don't hate them, but I fail to see why they are supposed to be so brilliant. To each his own, I guess.

I first heard They Might Be Giants in 1988, when Weird Al played the "Don't Let's Start" video on Al TV. Brilliant. I first saw them live in Portland at the Melody Ballroom in 1990, and have seen them live at least a dozen times since.

But as much as I liked the band way back then, they've improved with age. They started to lose me a little with John Henry, but I think Mink Car is one of the best things they've done...

I'm not a huge fan, but I did use to listen to their older stuff in the 90's.

I was lucky enough to be staying in the same hotel in London as the band back in '99. We kept the house bar open up two nights in a row drinking, smoking, joking, and jamming on a couple acoustic guitars. It was pretty badass.

I thought they were ok until I saw them on TechTV years ago, and learning more about them found out they were rather awesome far beyond just their music.

"The sun is a mass of incandescent gas, a gigantic nuclear furnace!"

I saw them at a dive bar a LONG time ago and they were excellent....

And that documentary is fantastic....better than End of the Century by far....

Seriously. Those are the only TMBG songs I can get behind. They're alright, but semi-serious, massive-discography bands just do not interest me in the least. You hear me, Ween?!

i think you'd have to be entirely ignorant to the rest of TMBG's catelog to find the tiny toons songs to be the best stuff they've done. I understand not being a fan at all, but to say that istanbul is seriously the best thing they've done for example. that's objectively wrong.
