a girl i work with and i were talking yesterday about them - does anyone know what the story is? are they still together? any news?

I'm pretty sure the've finished recording their new album & they played a tsunami benifit gig here in bristol with massive attack (& robert plant!!) last month. I would have loved to have been there but unsurprisingly tickets sold out in about 5 mins.

useless piece of information #325:
my old band used to practice at State of Art studios. which is where Portishead recorded parts of Dummy. It was a complete dump (but the guys who worked there were cool!!!)

I love them, and can't wait for the new album...

as far as sex to p-head or other "depressing" music... I think I do that too often.

i love portishead. its a beautiful expression of hip hop and diva. I particularly like the self titled album. Its like its telling the story of the wicked witch in Oz from her point of view. She speaks of lost love and fascism in a desperate sexy way. Like the witch was in love with the great oz . I think its the reason why you dont feel sorry for her. Because she is feeling sorry for herself and enjoys it. Anyone else see a similar thing. Like the great female fascist lost her only love sorta thing?

I lit Beth Gibbons' cigarette when I saw them play at the Metro in Chicago, like a million years ago. I know, it seems bonkers that someone with such a beautiful voice smokes! she's so lovely and tiny and fragile, oh I looove them.

And, people fuck to sad music, cause it is sexy. "we're two lonely drifters, oooh, it is so dirty and sad and hott."

This is one of those cds I've been meaning to get for a while, but I always space when I'm at the record store. So many choices! it is overwhelming!

^yea the samples play a big part in their sound, like on Wandering Star where they used that break from War's Magic Mountain, it's genius.

Anyone else heard Dangermouse's remix of It Aint Hard to Tell over Portishead? Shit is amazing.

That remix is crazy for sure. I got it off of a sampler for the Danger Mouse and Gemini album (before he did the Grey album and everyone jumped on the bandwagon)

Does anybody know how to get ahold of the noir film Portishead did before they put out Dummy. Supposedly Dummy serves as a sort of soundtrack for the movie. It apparently stars Beth and Geoff.

+1

It's got a bit less of an electronica style, but the moodiness is there, times 100.

Best band I've found so far.
Even if 'Third' isn't as wonderful as 'Dummy' and the selftitled album.
I've seen them on their 2008 European tour and it was just stunning! Best gig I've been on.

One of my favorite bands by far. I think it is always foolish to compare once CD to another. Each stands on their own and they are all wonderful.
