she's gorgeous, no doubt, and after reading a piece by kalefa sanneh claiming that she was the musical second coming, i checked her out, but just couldn't get into the vocal style at all. i guess i could try again.

She's AMAZING. I'm going to see her in LA at the end of this month -- I can't fucking wait!

When I first listened to her album, my initial thought was, "well, this is different." Her singing is rather child-like and it makes her songs unique. Maybe it's not for everyone but after playing it a couple more times I literally couldn't stop. Joanna Newsom is absolutely wonderful.

That is the perfect way to describe it.... I do enjoy the music... but like a lot of people I'm not sure about the voice, I'm sure it'll grow on me soon

Are you saying that Kestrel sounds like Joanna Newsom? Oh, the thought makes me giggle.

While normally Pitchfork reviews make me want to throw things at my computer, I have to admit that I couldn't put it any better than this:

Joanna Newsom possesses one of the shrillest, most keening voices you may ever hear, a sort of cawing, screeching, open-mawed banshee affectation that can be oddly endearing, but usually just makes people wish they were deaf. At first.

So true. Initial scepticism gives way to love, only love. She's also a lot more witty and biting lyrically than her cuteness might lead you to expect...my eyes went wide the first time I actually *heard* the following lines from "The Book of Right-On":

Do you want to run with my pack?
Do you want to ride on my back?
Pray that what you lack does not distract.

Ouch!
