That song didn't sell THAT many copies, to the point where he'd be guaranteed wealthy. I'm not surprised he burned through all his money years ago. Sympathy? None. Jackass? Yes.
Well, again, this is old news. But they were a touring band for years, that's where the money comes from. It sounds like he should have spent it more wisely. Duh.
The thing these musicians don't get - the vast majority of musicians never get signed, even if they're damn good, talented musicians. Of the few who do get signed, the vast majority have very short careers.
If I ever get signed, every paycheck I get, after paying bills, the rest goes into retirement accounts, land, and other investments. Credit cards HAVE to be paid off every month, because you never know when you're going to go from selling 100,000 albums to selling 10,000. You can't take anything for granted, especially money.
I actually learned this from reading Courtney Love years and years ago. Sad thing was, in her best year, I don't think she made what I made in my best year in Software. Not bragging at all, I'm just putting things in perspective. Courtney Fucking Love, who is pretty famous, everyone knows who she is, didn't make that much money in music. If she's not making bank, who is? That's what I'm saying.
I also know TLC was heavily in debt and they were huge. So was Toni Braxton, who was also huge. Hell, Prince changed his name because the record company screwed him over so badly.
Everclear dropped off fast, and they're the perfect example of a band who shouldn't have counted their chickens before they were hatched.

But to be fair, she is more well-known for being married to Kurt and for acting and looking like a drunken clown during interviews at awards shows n' stuff.
I don't think those interviews pay anything...not even if they were rebroadcast on Comedy Central.
And let's be honest dude....Hole? When's the last time you remember hearing them on the radio? I will still hear an Everclear song on the radio once in a while.

Alexakis and the newest incarnation of Everclear are doing fine and have been for some time now. They are working musicians. You are not. Bumping this news from years ago doesn't make you look wise. It just makes you look silly.
