I mainly use an Ibanez 540s, which looks like this only in 'black cherry' flavour

It's a fine macine but when it comes to down-tuning/different tunings it's a pain because of the floyd rose tremelo...
I have my eye on the ebony version of the Gibson SG Standard.
which I have played and it plays well!
Any recommendations/pics for me to check out?

Here are some sounds I've been playing

I love my sg. Same model, but red. It is the most dependable thing I have ever played.

The Ibanez 540 is great like most Ibanez guitars... I used to play on a floyd rose based Ibanez, and really miss the simplisity of a regular trem... Tuning can be hell on floyd rose... Just bought myself a Ibanez GRX 720 7-string... It has a regular trem and sounds great... The Gibson SG Standar I think would be a safe buy. Great guitar smile less frets, though...

SGs are okay, but I never found them to be totally comfortable for palm muting. Try to get your hands on a Godin LG or LGX - a really perfectly balanced guitar, they look great, and they're a lot cheaper than comparable guitars. I was dead set on a PRS until I tried my Godin out - I never looked back.

I have three types of guitars I love the sounds they givr and all are comfortable for long periods of time. The first is an old Yamaha SHB, this has that classic Peter Frampton sound. The next is the Kramer XL, which was used by bands like The Cure, Skid Row.....and other 80's bands...Great sound when distorted. The other one is a generic 50's practice guitar (doesn't have a name), look in yard sales. This has that Early Rolling Stones sounds. I tend to not go for your heavy modern guitars and go for the old ones with soul

My recommendation...go to a bunch of guitar stores, play a bunch of guitars (plugged in), and get the one that screams "PICK ME!! PICK ME!!" the loudest biggrin

What kind of music are you playing? Otherwise I'm just going to have to recommend a Les Paul.

I had an SG, they're real nice guitars. But I like real thin bouncy and twangy tones, and the SG (and most Gibson solid bodies) deliver the opposite.

I always liked SGs -- I'm a bass player and not much of a guitar player, but if I was a guitar player I can see myself using an SG. I really like the sound of them. Its just that heavy sound of them that's great.

I also have a thing for the clear Dan Armstrong guitars, but it could just be because a lot of my favorite bands use them and I've grown to like their tone a lot.

Yeah, that's right, thats how I picked my ibanez, I just HAD to have it!
smile
And I think that's what happened the other day with the SG, but because there's a fair bit of £££ involved I thought I'd browse a bit first before making any decisions!

I like playing open chords, stoner power chord riffs, freaky delay jams, big distorted riffs in general, ambient reverb tones, a bit of palm mute tomfoolery,
not too many solos...

I dunno how you feel about single-coil pickups vs. humbuckers, but I've always loved these guitars. Ricks sound great played hard.

And natch, they look cool as hell too.

I want a rickenbacker, but they are REALLY expensive. I buy cheap guitars that I like the look of, colour. I think style is important. I have a green tangle wood and a white squire telecaster and a black honer bass and a green yamaha acoustic. I like low action too.

That's what I did and it's the best way. Everyone listens to different music and likes different sounds. The perfect guitar to you might be a piece of crap to someone else (and vice versa).
