Weren't there songs on that record about anti-consumerism? I am very suprised that they would play it at Macys.

Lemme tell you something else about punks, punk. IF YOU DON'T THINK THE RAMONES WERE THE GREATEST BAND TO EVER WALK THE EARTH, YOU ARE NOT A PUNK. YOU ARE NOT EVEN FUCKING CLOSE. YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING IN A BAND, DOING A FANZINE OR SHOWING YOUR SORRY FACE AT A GIG. IF YOU PLACE ANY BAND ABOVE THE RAMONES, YOU ARE AN IDIOT. I WILL BE BUYING INSURANCE FROM YOU COME JULY.

god bless ben weasel... biggrin

Wow, thanks for reminding me why I don't read that rag.

The Ramones might make my Top 50 list, but that's about it. Certainly not the top 10.

Do you think anyone really pays attention to what Green Day is saying in their songs?

something christmasy and humorous for the thread

i dont see how DK can be categorized into hardcore punk. it does sound like something that would come out of one writers mind. Satirical politico punk sure, does that get a genre? genres and the fitting of bands into them are completely subjective. no one ever agrees.
you can traipse through the decades to name the 'godfather of punk rock' music. but the ones who exemplified the music and in turn keyed the name i believe are rightfully so the ramones, clash, the damned, sex pistols
just as i believe the ones who exemplified american hardcore would be bad brains, black flag, and minor threat. american hardcore, thrash, hardcore punk whatever you like to call it. lets stop with the million sub genres of punk and just call them the godfathers of hardcore. Simplifies discussion
started and exemplified are two entirely different carefully chosen words. like i said, influences trace down till forever but then you just get ideas of what you were originally searching for.
protopunk would be the huge blob of time that punk shot out of. bands ive seen mentioned like mc5, ny dolls, stooges, velvet underground could be the helping hands to what punk become. in my opinion
the title given to them, 'godfathers of punk rock', sounds exactly like some title a magazine would give them. its not like they get to chose some sticker that is put onto their cd case. And its not like some magazine has to know what they are talking about to print something.
to me they fit into the punk category which has historically been based largely in political or social movements and sure they are popular but punk followers have always been rather falsely elitist. just because they make money doesnt mean they are a bastardization of music. they are more melodic than the godfathers but music changes over time, whole genres do. i liked green day I still do. i dont like everything they put out but i have my right to pick and choose
i ate a large pizza and i want to vomit… on stage. hardcore

HahahahahHahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Green Day is better than the Ramones? Or The Clash?!?????!
Are you talking live or generally?
Or should I even bother to ask?

Holy fuck thats funny..........!!!!!!!
Oh geez my sides hurt..

Ok not to knock Green Day. I like them well enough.. but man..theres just no comparison between a Ramones show and a Green Day show. There just isnt.

i was referring to their cd, american idiot. if you scroll back, you'll see that. i own everything the ramones, dead kennedys and clash did and seen them all live...at least twice twice (7 times for the ramones).

i interviewed the ramones twice and the dks once for counterculture papers in chicago, detroit and milwaukee. i even had breakfast with the ramones, which was a pretty bizarre experience---they made much more wholesome menu choices than one would have suspected.

speaking, in my opinion and experience, the idiot cd, with perspective, will stand among the best conceptual rock pieces.

somewhere in the past I made a long post about how Green Day keeps punk alive. Now before you go nuts...think about it. A 14 year old kid hears Green Day on the radio and likes it. The kid becomes a huge Green Day fan. The kid reads some articles about them...and maybe hears that they were influenced by the Stiff Little Fingers. The kid thinks..."hmmm I've never heard of the Stiff Little Fingers...well, if Green Day is so good, the guys who influenced them must be good too"

i agree.

why do people defend bands like they were their mothers, or dis them like they were an ex-girl(boy)friend?

these threads usually fall into the "they're the best," "no, they're the best" contests.

it's just music, an art form. we should be excited about music and ready to share it with the newcomer. there's so much to investigate: "hey, have you heard this version of that track?" or "listen to this bootleg...i think you'll enjoy it."

people are so proprietary about music.

Hm. I've read at least six of the posts on this thread, and I'm still not completely convinced that Green Day are really the godfathers of punk.

But I definitely know that Guns & Roses are the godfathers of industrial music.

green day rocks, they're saying something and not just making pretty music. the fact that they've become so popular only means that they can reach more people. american idiot is such a great album lyrically. don't begrudge a bit of success as long as their egos don't get as big as their record sales.

I'm thinking "Godfathers of Punk" was probably a quote from a magazine. The entertainment industry always puts quotes from critics on movie posters, video games, and DVDs. Why wouldn't they start slapping them on CDs or putting the quotes in ads for records?

I agree.

Man I'm glad the internet wasn't around for the Beatles. What would this kind of thread have sounded like when they made the claim, "Bigger than Jesus"? whatever

I love Green Day but don't go so far as to give them that title. I'd say more like The Stooges. Green Day are more the godfathers of "pop-punk". Whatever they are, they make good musicthat I can realate too. Thats all I care about.
