how does everyone feel about live albums?

just an easy way to fulfill the last record in the contract, or are these really groundbreaking recordings of bands at their finest?

i've never been a huge fan of the "live album", but there are a few good ones that seem to leave their mark.

skinny puppy - ain't it dead yet
joy division - still
jesus lizard - show
johnny cash - at san quentin
ted nugent - double live gonzo

..and of course frampton comes alive.

i only like live albums if the bands don't sound exactly like their studio albums... i hate live albums that are over produced...

The Queers - Live in West Hollywood
The Smiths - "Rank"
Black Flag - Who's got the 10 1/2
Ministry - In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up
NOFX - I Heard They Suck Live
NUFAN - Live In A Dive

to name a few

ha! *rank* is the one album were i always say to myself (or bore my friends who have heard me say it 500 times) "they clearly rerecorded their parts in the studio". i think i will listen to the smiths now. esp. "still ill" of *rank*.

for bands outside the jazz genre, a live recording seems to retread established territory. so, in general, i think only live jazz records are good.

some guilty pleasures-

hot water music "live at the hardback" they taped mics to the floor and got some of the best live sound i've ever heard
descendents "hallraker" for sentimental reasons. a great set.

lyricist lounge vol. 1 most hiphop shows i've been to had awful sound, these discs have good balanced levels

The live recording that changed the world:

One good thing about music
when it hits
you feel no pain

One love.
