I don't think HP are that simple-minded. The song is about a breakup, pictures, strong emotional attachments, memories, etc. I think that they used the song because they want to push the concept of photography as a technology that has strong emotional and semantic components. It's like Kodak marketing Kodak Moments as a means of establishing physical memories as counterpart to emotional memory.


I can see that, but the commercial was full of smiley, happy people and butterflies. The images didn't fit the song.


I don't think they were implying a direct link between the mood of the songwriter and the mood of the ad subjects. My point was of trying to associate the semiotic effect of photos in the lyrics with photos in people's lives.
