*sorry if this thread's been done, i couldn't find it*

there was a post about slipknot earlier, and somebody made a comment about how the fact that they wear costumes is silly.
my roommate and i discussed costumed and madeup bands a few days ago. my personal feeling is that bands like this catch a lot of unnecessary flack for getting dressed up to play music. i think most would fight to the death the notion that they're gimmicky and striving for attention with their looks, but there are still a ton of people who feel that way.
i don't personally like slipknot or afi, but thinking back a little i can think of a few bands that i could get into that were dress up bands (misfits, alice cooper, kiss). i guess i just feel kind of bad for bands that recieve the criticism for their looks instead of their music.

anybody else have thoughts on this?
or other bands that are costume/makeup bands that rock?
(if anybody says manowar i'll cry)

I was into japanese glam rock for a long time (still like some of it)

it depends really
a lot of bands put more into the image than the music, and others concentrate more on the music(which is what it's really about for me)

I mean, there are a few bands who never used to dress up and then suddenly just started to, and it looks like a ploy to get certain types of fans(I mean, AFi, for one, weren't always like that. . .neither was Atreyu. . .but I never liked them so it's not like it matters to me. . .just another thiing to joke about)

The fact that I can't stand Slipknot or ICP has nothing to do with what they look like.

Word. It's the fact that their music sucks. The stupid costumes just make them look more dumb.

Most bands are wearing "costumes" when it comes down to it. I don't mind a bit of theatrics as long as ultimately there's some substance there. For some bands, the theatrics are more important than the music itself - and that's fine as well as long as that's part of the band's "thing".

If it works its usually brilliant -- if it doesn't work its usually pretty bad. There's a handful of bands that it just makes more sense for them to perform in costume.

At the same time, the bands it works for have pretty good music too. The bands costumes don't work for, usually have some pretty awful music.

I always thought Mudvayne was too good for the make up, and I'm very happy to see that, for the most part, they're really given that up.

In a whole, though, I'd have to say that I'm a sucker for bands like this. They almost always catch my eye, and generally end up checking them out. Doesnt mean theyr'e good, but it's hard not to notice bands like that.

A few good costume/makeup bands: GWAR, Corporate Avenger, Mudvayne, the Berzerker, the Aquabats

I'm not into Immortal, but I'll agree that black metal fit's this topic, and there is a lot of good black metal out there. Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Behemoth, Khold, and I personally like Dimmu Borgir. I don't think I'd every try to talk to any of them about this, though. Especially Gaahl from Gorgoroth. tongue
