What I've found is not to look for a distortion box for the destortion, but for a complement for the gain from your amp, Like my set-up I use a old Ibanez tube screamer just to add some edge and shape to the gain from my Boggie. I would recomend looking at an amp-modeler if your not happy with the gain from your amp (I recomend anything Line-6). Other than that distortion stomp boxes (IMO) are more for small amps with no real gain.

you could always stick withh outboard shit made by Marshall.....the Guv'ner is a real nice distortion box used in tandem with a Marshall rig....

the big muff is good, but only if you can find and older one.....like the silver one pictured.....the newer green ones suck.

i prefer the mesa boggie v-twin. its actually a tube driven pre-amp which can be adjusted pretty much any way you'd like. i've used it to crank up a solid state amp, or along side a crate vc50-212. also, since its a pre-amp, you can go straight into the board if your amp ever craps out
