The first three I thought of were Jagger, Morrison, and Iggy.

I have to go with Mick Jagger overall for his engagement of the audience, charisma, and influence on countless other rock frontmen.

Iggy had more "antics", but I don't think he was as engaging.

And Morrison simply had too many performances where he was wasted and unable to put on a good show

I'd like to add David Yow and Roky Erickson. Also Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy.

David Lee Roth rocks that front man position too, you see far too many bands where the lead singer has a guitar in his hands, hindering them from pulling that energy out of the audience. David got it 4sure. A singer in my opinion, should be just that. Pure Adrenalin and vocals.

Another that comes to mind is Queensrycke's Jeff Tate. That man can sing!!

Daltrey was untouchable in his prime. Morrison was closest (when he wasn't hammered).

Freddie Mercury never gets mentioned enough in lists such as these...

Not a popular choice it seems, but I've always been Very taken with Perry Farrel's handling of a song and audience.

A lot of people mentioned Maynard James Keenan. Just curious - why would you place him as the best above all other front men?

He knows how to write a song and Sing it so eloquently that ... Its the essence, the spirit. Its what he puts into it. Its not just screaming for the sake of fucking screaming. There is always a meaning behind something... I know a lot of people don't get it, but it takes a special kind of person to get it in my opinion... Just sayin...biggrin Its also the band that makes the music too obviously, but since we're talking frontmen, well now you know why.

For me Phil Anselmo is the consummate front man, minus his heroin days...
His stage presence is so complete that everyone has their eye on him and might do anything he says to do into the mic.

Part of it is his live performance. He's rarely at the front, like singers are traditionally. He takes a place on the middle of the band. It isn't Maynard and TOOL or Maynard and A Perfect Circle, it is the band on stage.

Angus Young. He's the only front man I can think of who doesn't even have to SAY anything while he completely takes charge of the bands' mojo.

Personally, I'm not a huge NIN fan, but I have to go with Trent. Mercury was an amazing singer and songwriter, but I wouldn't call Queen "his" band.

Reznor, on the other hand, managed to single-handedly create a band that's really just him, and have massive impact both on mainstream and niche music. I think you can read the mid-to-late 90s as belonging to Reznor as much as you can read the early 90s as belonging to Cobain. Cobain had his Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Smashing Pumpkins, and Reznor had his Stabbing Westward, Marilyn Manson, and... Smashing Pumpkins. Hm. Didn't notice that before. Anyway.

But he's still going, still putting out music, and still succeeding. Hell, a lot of his recent stuff has been pretty damn good, even if it's not particularly my style. He seems more motivated than ever.

So yeah, I have to go with Reznor.
