Well, I read through everything and I didn't see any reference to the bands I'm REALLY embarrassed to admit I listened to when I was 14. Sue me, I was 14 in '97 and '98. I was a huge BSB and Nsync fan. And Hanson. And all those other craps. Ricky Martin, etc.
I listened to punk when I wasn't around my friends...I thought I was insanely uncool.
'86 was the dawn of my hair metal days so I was still into stuff that I am still proud of now, Van Halen, Rush, Early Motley Crue. Still ok with that stuff. Now ask '88 and we will have a funny discussion.

when i was 14 ??
I was listening to
The Damned
Sex Pistols
The Clash
The Jam
and Dire Staits
sorry still listen to them all
when I was 12 now that was a mess
The Sweet
Garry Glitter
Bay City Rollers
Showadywaddy
and The Wombles
I can remember hordes of screaming girls running by me to see the likes of Marc Bolan and David Bowie (few screaming boys in that crowd too) but I was happy being a womble fan how i regret that now
Front 242 disco? if only the Bee Gees had been that good!!!
like a lot of people, i was in transition when i was 14 (it was '92). it was g'n'r vs. nirvana, aerosmith vs. pearl jam. and then sonic youth came along and blew the fuckin' doors down.
I'm just going to divide this into bands I was embarrassed about and bands I still listen to:
Still listen to:
Nirvana
Blink 182
Rancid
Green Day
Foo Fighters
Now I hate them:
Korn
The Offspring
I really started to get into the music that I listen to now at about 15, and the music I listened to that was horrible was when I was about 10, ie New Kids on the Block, Vanilla Ice, McHammer, C+C Music factory...you get the idea...
14... 14.... man, it's hard to remember who I listened to then. I hated most music at that point, mainly watching MTV just to see hot scantily-clad women. (It was right around this time, though, that I began to discover bands like Sonic Youth, showing me that there *was* good music, even if it wasn't the most popular stuff.) I distinctly recall being fond of "Weird" Al Yankovic, but I'm not embarrassed of that, even though I've kind of outgrown it.
I think what I'm most embarrassed of is *disliking* the following groups or performers when I was 14; eventually I began to enjoy them, but it took me a while to admit it.
1) Prince (and the Revolution); liking him was considered "gay" when I was a kid.
2) Iggy Pop/The Stooges; he was just some old guy to me; it wasn't until years later that I finally heard some of his better stuff.
3) Public Enemy; I acted like I liked rap, but I didn't. So I claimed to like them then, but didn't. Now I do like them. Irony!
4) The Carpenters; I know they're hokey. I like them.
5) Billie Holliday; I thought it was old, boring stuff then. Now, it gives me that knife-in-the-ribs feeling, which is a good thing.
6) Patsy Cline
7) The Carter Family; Cline and the Carters, as well as a host of older "hillbilly" artists, plus the standards like Cash and Williams, just got lumped in with my overall hatred of country. Just a knee-jerk reaction against living in a country-lovin' state.
