I don't think it ruins female musicians at all. I mean, I haven't hung out with any personally...so I can't say how they change personally, but I think that marriage doesn't really have any bearing on their musical performance.

I would site Liz phair as another example... I think relationship angst makes for good music....

In my opinion, I think these gals all sucked to begin with.
There's a joke there somewhere, but I think i'm going to keep it to myself. i'll resist the temptation to type...

heehee- i agree....well, maybe not madonna- that is, i don't think she's a great talent, but i also think "SUCK" is a strong word to describe her..er...stop that you perverts!
i think it's kind of a stupid question. the same thing can be said for male musicians. i really don't think marriage has anything to do with it...many artists just end up sucking over time, even if they have a strong start. it's just one of the facts of rock 'n' roll life.
I just went the an Ani concert in Santa Cruz last sunday, while i wish she would have played a few more of her older songs as i love them, she was still incredible, her new style is different but just as awsome, i love her no matter what she does.
i dont think her getting married has effected her work negatively at all, same as Tori

Maybe her marriage to the simple minds guy was a mistake but her marraige to ray davies made a great record (learning to crawl). Her marriage to me will be much more successful
catboner said: its not marriage. its age. over time people just tend to lose their "edge" or whatever.
This is probably more true than the marriage idea (although you could argue that getting married is an aspect of getting older)...but what did John Lennon say about the Beatles-something like they were at their best when they were young and starving?

well yeah, as people age they tend to get married, but some people that dont get married still put out crappy records when they get old... and it seems that that john lennon quote is exactly what i was saying.
Madonna is a pathetic performer who relies on hip producers and focus groups to chart each of her "re-inventions".
I grew up with Tori, and Little Earthquakes is the most powerful album I've ever heard in my life. I haven't listened to it in 5 years because it's just too much.
I would suggest that you all check out Kristin Hersh's new album Sunny Border Blue. I don't even listen to her, but from what little I've heard, she's absolutely one of the best songwriters around right now. Really amazing stuff.
It is unfair to say that marriage makes female musicians worse. I think that people can relate to certain stages in an artist's career. Some people love Tori Amos' "Little Earthquakes" others love "Strange Little Girl" I don't think marriage is the problem, its just that artists change a lot during their career and a big change will result from getting married. Your whole life changes, so that is bound to affect your music. Whether it affects it positively or negatively is up to the audience.

Why should a musicians domestic / marital staus have any impact whatever on her musical talent? Would we ask the same question about men? I think it's also rather ignorant to suggest that as you get older you get boring. People change, their life experiences develop and they are compelled to write about different things. This isn't bad. Kat (babes in toyland) is married and has a son, she's also well into middle age but she rocks like a mother f***er! Don't subscribe to the pissy idea that a married/older woman is a tame woman.

I shall now stand down from my soapbox
I agree completely. their sound my change, but if people don't change their sound over time, it just gets old.... people grow, and so should their music. you can't just write about the same stuff forever....
And on a completely off note, Sarah McLachlan will always be one of the best artists out there, if not to anyone else, then she'll always be that to me. And to anyone who thinks I'm dumb for that... fuck you.
