MTV UK has posted some clips of the Icon Cure tribute show taped recently. Great Videos from AFI, and The Deftones and some not-so-great from Blink 182 and Razorlight. Sadly 311 was left off the broadcast. MTV ICON

Yeah midgets in cat suits is a bad idea (Haven't actually seen it, just made that part up...)

And everybody has heard the 311 cover of love song, they don't need to broadcast it in the icon show as well do they?

meh whatever...I completely forgot...

I'm sorry, but I viciously, viciously hate The Cure. Robert Smith is a no talent hack who's only talent is whining. His lyrics are overly sappy and trite, and his music is empty and bland. How the fuck did they ever get so popular is what I want to know.

it's okay if you hate them, but don't deny the talent. maybe you have only heard the poppy stuff.

it's funny that you think he's whiny...and your favorite band is muse. nothing against muse though.

Man, I've tried to like them, I've gone through a few albums, and I just.... can't. I just can't find the talent in there. Toss out a few songs that might sway me.

And please don't toss Bellamy's and Smith's voices in the same pot. Bellamy is an excellent singer, he's got a huge range, and he knows how to use it. It's an operatic voice, very Freddy Mercury. Whereas Smith doesn't so much sing as he does mope vocally. I am a better singer than Smith, hands down.

Just like Heaven, Close to Me, Fascination Street, Friday I'm in Love...to name a few of the more popular.

*tried to think of unwhiny songs for ya Wrongturn*

oh yeah, avoid the entire Disintegration album if you don't dig the "whiny"

me looooooooooooooves the cure. biggrin

I knew I should have started another thread about this, instead of just posting in the other thread circulating.

To add to this, if you guys are interested in viewing some of the photos from the show, this is a direct link to the gettyimages.com page.

well i wasn't really trying to compare bellamy's voice to smith's in terms of who has the range. i just think that muse sounds a little whiny sometimes too. but that's my opinion.

smith doesn't have a great range, but he does have a great voice stylistically speaking. his talent lies in creating the entire cure sound. it's art...to suggest there's no talent is like saying abstract art doesn't require talent because it doesn't look like anything. does that make sense?

like i said, if you don't like it, it's cool. but he's definitely talented. if anyone could do it, nobody would care about the cure.

I was amazing at the Deftone's preformace after watching the video of it. I love the deftones and I think they were just...amazing. I've yet to watch any of the others, but I think I will now.

I thought that was extremely boring.

my critique of the other videos (for what it's worth)

Blink 182- fucking ruined a great song there. great job guys. learn how to play that goddamn guitar.

AFI - that was awesome.

the guys who covered "Boy's don't cry" - I don't remember their name. they did good. i liked it a lot

I liked the dead tree a lot too.

Yeah it was a bit boring in the beginning because theres a 2 minute intro. But I think they did an amazing job at covering the song.

which is what they did "covered" the song... they didn't shorten the "intro" to appease the ADD crowd...

Bingo.

That was a brillant cover, full of just as much as the original. 311 can mow my lawn, fags.

I have to agree with FreakPirate.

AFI, who I'm not really a big fan of, did a great job. Davey Havok really appeared to pour himself into that, but then it's hard not to sing that song and feel something.

The Deftones also did a fine rendition.

Blink, well, they sucked. Timing was off, the words seemed forced, etc...

But does anyone else think that Robert Smith looked positively bored everytime they showed him?

He did look bored. I have yet to watch the entire thing, I only watch the ripped version AFI's performance. But from what I saw, he looked as though he was bored out of his mind, and didn't want to be there.

Keep praisin' Davey. *cough*

yeah! i totally agree!

i mean, I've always said the exact same thing about other supposed "singers" like bob dylan and lou reed and jonathan richman and stephen malkmus and paul westerberg and johnny cash and joe strummer and steve wynn and... and.. and...

i can't stand non-traditional singing voices. finally someone else who agrees with me on this!
high five!

Bah, I'm just trying to get the point across that Smith isn't that great. No amount of calling it a different style or what have you will change that. Just look at the AFI performance. I really liked it, someone who could actually sing combined with that song? It was great! Then I listened to the original, because maybe I had been missing out... But no. It was just Smith moping at the microphone, zero energy, zero style, and when he does put energy behind his vocals, it just ends up sounding forced.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are hundreds of people who would have made a better Robert Smith than Robert Smith ever could. He's just so special because he did it first.

Blecch.

The only one I liked was the Deftones. They did an amazing cover and evne kept those weird keyboard sounds. Everyone else tried to punk them up too much.
