...Costello, that is (in honor of his TWO new albums released this week). Mine are:

1) This Year's Model
2) Get Happy
3) My Aim Is True
4) Armed Forces
5) Imperial Bedroom

I could name five more and they'd be almost as good. Probably the most prolific and consistently high-quality songwriter of the past 50 years.

This Year's Model rules...possibly the greatest rock & roll album ever. After that, I'll take:

- My Aim Is True
- Armed Forces
- Get Happy!!
- the criminally underrated Trust

Yeah, I'm a big Trust fan as well - I'd probably rate that higher than Imperial Bedroom. I also listen to Taking Liberties a lot, although it's not an official "album".

Trust would definitely be my #5a. Taking Liberties is fucking awesome. I am old enough to remember buying that like 6 months after Get Happy came out. It was insane, releasing 40 awesome songs in such a short time span.

Has Rykodisc re-released Taking Liberties yet? I have it on vinyl and CD, but the CD mastering sucks ass...

Actually, Rhino has taken over the E.C. re-issues. The Rykodisc re-issues were single disk, "extended play" versions with extra tracks. The Rhino versions are two-disk sets with the original album (the U.K. version) on one disk and an extra disk with all sorts of extra tracks. The Rhino versions also have fancier artwork and commentary by Elvis. I haven't heard that they're gonna do a Taking Liberties re-issue. Rather, I think that those tracks will be included as some of the bonus tracks on the other re-issues. That's also how they're treating the "Live at Hollywood High" E.P. that was packaged with Armed Forces.

I'm listening to him right now, weird.

I've only heard This Year's Model and My Aim Is True, they're both great.

Does anyone else have the 5 EP Costello & Nieve live set?
It was a limited release in '96.
This is right up there with my favorites.

I was going to post Costello albums as a joke when I thought this was a Presley thread. This isn't as fun now. frown

#1 BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE ...trivia buffs: it is from this album that the name "napolean dynamite" originates. E.C. was credited as Napoleon Dynamite in the liner notes.
#2 BRUTAL YOUTH
#3 ALL THIS USELESS BEAUTY
#4 GET HAPPY!!
#5 TRUST ...if only for the duet with Glenn Tilbrook. How i love Squeeze!

yeah. i know. i didn't mention any of the first three albums. well, a) i think the songwriting is better on subsequent albums and b) i think i just plain got burned out on them from listeing to them so much when i was younger.

And although the rest of my list can be debated, #1 can't.
BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE is THE best one. <--period

Elvis Presley never made one good album, let alone five. He was a hillbilly tool. Good looking, though. Also, James Burton rocked.

I'll somewhat agree. i'm not a big Elvis fan. OK, so he was the first major white person to perform rock 'n roll. Is it a coincidence that he also happened to be extremely attractive to young girls?
He maintained artistic relevance for, what? ... maybe a few years at most. there were many other performers who did what he did just as well, or better.
Presley just happened to be the good looking one at the right place and the right time.

Costello swallows, but the Kings would read as follows:

1. the best of

2. the very best of

3. greatest hits

4. the singles

5. the very best greatest hit singles
