surreal surreal surreal surreal

I'm really happy they're getting a tribute, but... confused

You'd think they'd pick bands within the Cure's genre. I know Blink 182 covered them, but they sound NOTHING like them. If you're going to do a tribute to the Cure, get Siouxsie, Depeche Mode, New Order, Morrissey, etc.

Of course, the modern MTV audience would be completely lost. They'd probably go into shock after exposure to good, original music. tongue

Umm but didn't Robert Smith do vocals on the last Blink album? So he's probably happy to have them there.

urm...i think it's called selling out...and i loathe loathe loathe to use that term about the cure, but..."pictures of you" in an HP ad, letting shit bands cover his songs (apologies to those who like said shit bands), writing songs that might sound like cure songs in some parallel galaxy, but that really fit right into playlists along with other top 40 modern rock (is there such a thing?)...

i mean, just listen to the new album, the cheesy lyrics, the shitty production, the shitty mix (ah, i'm ranting again)...he sounds like a parody. and i'm sorry, but they were at their peak with head on the door, kiss me kiss me kiss me and disintegration, if we're talking powerful lyrics and music.

So when exactly did he "sell out"? The Cure has been an MTV staple for 20 years, so is it this MTV tribute special that makes him a sellout? Or was it because Pictures of You was in a TV commercial? "Selling out" means to me comprimising your vision for the money, not just making money off your work. So how does including an old Cure song in a new ad make him a sellout?

The Cure has always been a POP band and Robert Smith is a multi millionaire. Yes it's original music, or at least it was for a good decade or so, but the Cure has always been about writing catchy, appealing, pop songs. Even the tunes from Three Imaginary Boys are not punk in the sense of the day. They were more comparable to a band like the Police at that time. But even peppier than the Police! The Cure's darker leanings, yes, have inspired more undergraound acts since then, but the Cure themselves, perhaps by some definitions of "selling out" have been doing so for their whole career.

by writing the songs he's writing and working with the producer he's working with, it seems a calculated attempt to win fans he wouldn't normally aim at. i'm not begrudging him if he chooses to try to get a new generation of fans. i just won't listen to the shitty music he puts out.

and a great song like pictures of you is cheapened by its use to shill for computers, no matter how "old" the song is.

edited because i'm eating tuna.

Okay, some of you did take into consideration that maybe some of the bands that performed were in fact influenced in a way by The Cure, right? I'm not sure about Blink or the Deftones, but I do know for a fact that The Cure is a heavy influence for AFI, namely Jade Puget and Davey Havok.

That little bit being said, the show was recorded already and is beginning to air overseas right now. When it will hit the states is uncertain at this point, but if you are at all interested in viewing this, it's available for streaming here.

What the fuck is he on?

Yeah I couldn't believe he'd say that frown . It seems all is not well inside the band at the moment .. the european tour has apparently been cancelled as well because robert smith was feeling "cranky".

well, apparently he likes Blink 182 enough to record with them, so they shouldn't have to pay him much for that. As for AFI, they wear makeup so he probably likes them just for that. wink

He's also already said that he likes Blink 182. When Curiosa rolled through Atlanta, Robert was being interviewed on 99x (an Atlanta radio station) and when asked who he was listening to, he said that he thought Blink 182 was a great band or something along those lines....

Also, I very, very vaguely remember a quote where someone said that, "If the latest Blink album was by any band other than Blink, it would have been hailed as a masterpiece." I think this quote was attributed to R. Smith, but I'm not positive about this one. I heard the 99x interview, myself, however, so I can vouch for him already saying that he likes Blink.

I really don't find anything strange about this. I don't listen to Blink 182 anymore, but they aren't a bad band. I can even understand how someone like Robert Smith might like them. Hell, I think it was 6 or 7 years ago I liked them.

Not entirely sure. I don't keep up on Cure news. Only reason I paid attention to this is because AFI covered "Just Like Heaven." Favorite band covering single song by The Cure that I like. That's all I need.
