Your absolutely right, they don't make metal like that any more. And you're also right about Numetal sucking. I heard Rod Stewart in rotation at Hometown Buffet tonight and thought to myself "wow, at one point that was considered edgy." Now it's Muzak. Such is the fate of Nikelback, Staind, and any band with Mud in the title.

As for what we call metal now, that's really, really, really a matter of opinion. Let's just stick with it so people don't get confused, mmkay?

Rod Stewart was really only taken seriously to rock fans when he sang for the Jeff Beck Group.
I wouldnt consider Nickelback or Staind metal, they fit in the rock catagoery.
As far as Nu Metal, some of it sucks and some of it doesnt. Bottom line is that there are plenty of new metal acts out there today that would fit in the 80s like a glove.

For serious.

Which brings me to my point... a lot of this newer "cookie cutter" metal is giving the whole damn genre a bad name. It's marketable, it's accessable, gives angry kids something to hold onto. In my eyes, and damn near any one real metalhead I've come across feels the same. There's an upside, though... it's getting people more into the genre. Everyone's gotta start somewhere, right? Even the most high-strung metalhead has probably made some questionable purchases in the past (in comparison to their total kvlt status these days).

If you like it enough you'll delve deeper and deeper and look much harder to find certain albums that so and so told you about. You'll go to shows and flip through the distros seeing bands you've never heard of before mixed in with some of your absolute favorites, and aparently it sounds like an awesome artist you're a fan of.

Metal is far from dead, it's just that most of the stuff isn't as easy to find and the shows aren't as publicized and are often at smaller venues. Die hard fans don't care.

That said, I hate Manowar mad

That's been heavy metal's MO from the very start. The problem with the newer metal is not that it's marketable, it's that it fucking sucks.

on the topic of great new metal, and how righteously not dead the genre is:

3 Inches of Blood - Fire Up the Blades
At the Throne of Judgment - The Arcanum Order
Job For A Cowboy - Genesis

A lot of bands do form in hopes of taking over the world and making it big, yes. However, bands that I'm mostly talking about didn't have the aspiration to get as big as some of them did, they just wanted to make music that meant something to them. Sodom, Carcass, Death, Bathory, Kreator, etc. Mainstream? Maybe slightly, but these bands are legendary, putting out some of the most notable metal releases in the genres of thrash, death, and black metal. Certainly not mainstream at the time!

And d20 and others are right, there's plenty of new material coming out that still rules. Here's my abridged list of awesome '06-'07 releases from bands not listed yet in this thread (Belphegor was, but it was spelled wrongbiggrin):

Municipal Waste: The Art of Partying (thrash)
Ghoul: Splatterthrash (thrash)
Dismember: The God that Never Was (death)
Enslaved: Ruun (black)
Watain: Sworn to the Dark (black/death)
Belphegor: Pestapokalypse VI (black/death)

... etc. and so on.

I'm not sure about it being like that from the start, since you can tell apart bands from different eras, some of them had a prety unique sound to them, in my opinion.

Now as far as metal not being valid, hell no, it's just as valid now as it ever was, only it might take a little longer to come across a record that really blows your brains out, since they are all so predictable.
