I dug these but in all honesty, I'm not an audiophile and don't know how great they really are

Virtually every recording studio I've been in or know of use AKG.

I've had a pair of AKG K 240DF's for more than a decade and kicked the living crap out of em and they are still good as new.
These things are practically antiques but they are still made and are generally considered the reference standard.
They're not for everybody though as they are 100% neutral.
No extra color, no bass boost, totally pure.
Most people tend to dislike true hi-fidelity but give yourself an hour or so with these and you'll totally get it.

Oh crap! I think these are considered "semi-open".
Still, check em out. They really are amazing.

Beyerdynamic DT 770s they have never failed me, and you could never blow them out. I also have noticed a low noise level. Keep in mind however i did not have to pay for them... i work for a radio studio and I chose them and corperate ordered them for me.. they can be upwards of $160 US

headphones that actually use a noise cancelling procedure are overrated. a pair of shure or etymotic earphones with a good seal, or a pair of closed sennheiser or beyerdynamic cans will do the job just fine. although, my personal favorite headphones EVER are the sony MDR-V6. they've been being manufactured since the 80s and have a cult following. you can find a pair for $100 or less; many people consider them the best headphones they've ever used. oh, and don't confuse them with the newer, crappier V600.

I'm with bocuma. The noise cancelling output I've heard really annoys me (listened to Sennheiser and Sony models), and the sound quality of the drivers tend to suffer or be weakened.

The one issue that comes up (for me at least) with the etymotic / shure-style seal on your ears is that you tend to hear everything - including your blood pulsing, your tongue moving around in your mouth, and the headphones rustling the hairs in your ear canal.

For portable use, I'm fine with the Sony MDR-EX51/71 models. They shut out plenty of noise, and they have respectable sound quality on their own (come on, they're $35-$50-ish earbuds). Something like the AKG-240 series doesn't work on those trips - trust me, I've tried, even with headphone amps.

i'm going to have to cast another vote for AKG's. i have the 240studios, and they are incredible. not noise cancelling, but they are full cups so if you crank it you probably won't hear too much else. and considering they're under $100, it's really hard to beat that. no coloration of the sound, you get exactly what you're supposed to hear. plus, they're lightweight, so you can wear them ALL day without ear fatigue.

I will always swear by Senheisser products... but out of my hop I sell mostly AKG as far as headphones go. If you tell me the specific applications I can recommend models. I'll even tell you how much they should cost you... lest somebody have them overpriced.

WELL worth the bucks.

I even use them plugged into the soundboard onstage at times - albeit rarely - I want the blasts from the amps, speakers and monitors overwhelming me, but it's cool hearing the mix as it'll come out on the recordings, too..

I find those little ear buds really uncomfortable and annoying so I want a good pair of headphones that cover your ears. Has anyone tried the AKG K450 headphones? I like the look of them because they're not too big but in terms of sound I've read really good and really bad reviews for them. Can anyone recommend them or anything similar? It's for listening to music on my mp3 player. Thanks!

I'm currently in love with my new SR-80's from www.gradolabs.com they give you audiophile-level performance that doesn't cost a fortune. That being said I wouldn't use them to walk around town or on the train. They have an open design so you can hear what's going on around you, which make them perfect for me to use at work.
