How many of you play the piano? Do you have any pictures?

I've been playing since I was four. My piano is currently held hostage at my brother's house. My parents said I could have it once I buy a house. They don't want me lugging it from apartment to apartment because a) it's expensive to move it and b) it's expensive to have it re-tuned every time it's moved.

I miss it. frown I'm in withdrawal. If I don't get my hands on a piano soon, I may lose it.

I took this picture while at my brother's house. Those are my sister-in-law's Precious Moments figurines, their wedding pictures, and her sappy taste in music. I wouldn't be caught dead with Precious Moments figurines or sheet music from Celine Dion and church collections. wink

I really wish I had some shots of me playing it.

Play? Hell I even invented the "holding a tap-dancing baby who stomps on the keys cranking out a ragtime beat" style.

You should paint your piano black and put stickers on it to exorcise all the evil that your brothers wife has subjected it to.

I grew up with this among other things in the family home...replete with primitive drum machine and rotating speaker....

as well as this:

which is an old pump organ...my dad also had various concertinas and accordians......so, I did play quite a bit growing up but always felt more intune composing on my guitar...

That had me laughing until I got short of breath over the idea of painting a piano. I HATE when people do that, especially since they're wood for a reason. Paint keeps the wood from vibrating properly, which affects tone. Plus it looks like crap. wink

Although not as crappy as Precious Moments figurines...

i play a little, just enough to get my face slapped really.

My best advice is to get a cheap keyboard so you can fulfill your musical needs and then work on what you want to try when you Can get to the real thing

I have a keyboard. It's not the same.

Playing a keyboard and a piano is like driving a go-kart and a Porsche. The differences are astounding, especially if the keyboard is slightly smaller than a piano keyboard.

I COULD get a keyboard that has hammer-weight action, is the right size/octaves, has pedals, has perfect piano sound (even that bit of percussive tone), and so on. I've heard them and played them, and damn if they aren't a great substitute. I just need about $1600. tongue

I have a really really shitty keyboard but it doesn't do it... I miss the piano so much. It's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to going back to school. They have pianos scattered all over the school that I have free access too. I have all my music, just nothing to play on.

I too feel the withdrawl...

*bumped in honor of the news story*

Adding a question: What are some of your favorite composers/artists to play and/or listen to?

I love to play Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Chopin is my absolute favorite to play, but I like Beethoven's sonatinas. I WISH I could play Rachmaninov. I swear that man was born with eighteen fingers because I sure as hell can't hit all of those notes at once. tongue

One of my favorites is Debussy's Children's Corner Suite. It's witty and technically difficult, and he makes extensive allusions to children's piano exercises and other styles of music. He wrote a little about having to experiment with technique in order to make the piece playable, including shifting his weight on the bench to allow his hands to play in different tempos.
