Pop sensation Britney Spears is quite upset with the New York Post after the paper published photos of her with a drink in her hand that the paper stated was “whiskey”.  Spears is reportedly demanding a full retraction of the article and a undis closed financial settlement from the paper, or she has threatened to initiate a lawsuit. Spears claims that the photograph taken around noon in front of a liquor store actually depicts her imbibing a ginseng energy drink.

Uh-oh. This could be bad for her career. She might ruin her reputation as the sort of person who will get completely hammered in Vegas, drunkenly marry the first guy that comes along and then annul the whole thing in a fit of embarrassment. I totally agree with you there. I've drunk whiskey during the day before. I don't drink all that often, but who the hell cares when you do it? I suppose next they're going to report that she likes sex in the morning too?

Seriously though, I will certainly admit to having, on a number of occasions, alcohol at noon. Hell, I've even stayed up until noon drinking. None of this is even remotely regular, but it does happen on occasion for me, my friends, my enemies, my relatives, and probably the majority of everyone else.

Granted, I probably don't know enough about Britney Spears and any past allegations of drug abuse. Nevertheless,what bothers me the most about this article is the way the media (and others) will jump to conclusions about substance abuse problems. Drinking at noon?!? OMG -- ALCOHOLIC FOR SURE!! That's as bad as the way the government equates ANY illegal drug use to "abuse", no matter how much, how often, and under what pretenses a substance is used. Peyote in a religious service? Oh, you're not native American --- DRUG ADDICT!!!! Bullshit, I say.

In order to have "abuse" you have to have "normal use" and unfortunately, "normal use" is pretty indistinct. Drinking at noon on one's vacation or day off could certainly be rationalized as "normal use" and when considering musicians' and celebrities' odd schedules, I don't think it's fair to guage these people's drug use on the same basis that would be adequate for a 9-5-er.

Quite on a side note, Britney's alibi is an excellent example of drug hypocrisy. Couldn't a ginseng energy drink be considered a drug too? Hell, for all I know, Britney is jacked on that stuff all day. That stuff works for me, especially in large amounts. I'm projecting, but if I drank that stuff all the time, it could constitute abuse in my life on the same basis that using other drugs continually would constitue abuse in my life.

On a final note, if I were Britney, I'd probably be a hardcore alcoholic, trying to contend with all stardom has to offer. Personally, I don't think I could ever handle it. She does it better than I ever could.

Btw, I'm not much of a fan of her or her music.

If it was me and I wasn't drinking whiskey, I'd still be drinking whiskey.
