My girlfriend all through high school - in the late '80s - was named Eileen.
Yes, there were many jokes .

I love that song.

Did you also know that the lead singer was an egomaniac?

And that's a problem because? Everybody knows that there is no genius without ego.

TheFuckOffKid and DrNecessitor are right on the money.

This band gets too much shit for having ONE big single when they had three - yeah three - good albums. Searching for the Young Soul Rebels was the bomb, all brass and paddy style circa 1980. Celtic Soul Brothers wasn't just ONE FUCKING SONG, and anyway that song was pretty good. And Don't stand Me Down was a weird departure, but - damn - it's good too.

now that's what i'm talking about. simple as it may be, this made my day.

cause dexy's were not just a one song band at all. . .

Some info regarding this song...

First there are two videos out there for it...the formal one with an "Eileen" and a "Johnny Ray" character (JR played by the lead singer)...and a live performance version. Personally I really like the live one (which I believe came first) over the super cheesy Johnny Ray version.

Second, this song went all the way to #1, and was the ONE and ONLY song to break Michael Jackson's streak of consecutive weeks #1 with various Thriller singles smile
