I cant say I agree completly..Metallica after 10 platinum albums .When these old bastards play a show, its a 4 or 5 hour show. Now thats a show. The Beatles, well I have mixed emotions about them. I think they really got cool in the 70's . We can thank heavy drug use for that. As far as the Pumpkins, well , their just not even worth talking about.......stop cryin Billy, your rich now.

Nirvana... Go ahead and yell at me. They were alright but if kurt was still alive, I think they'd be pretty much forgotten by no. There were a bunch of bands around at the time that were just as good or better but didn't get the press.

How could The Beatles NOT be overrated? They've become this huge legendary entity, far beyond being a band. Personally, I don't think there's a clunker in the bunch, except for Sgt. Pepper. Now THAT'S an overrated piece of crap!

I think Nine Inch Nails is way overrated

how can the beatles be overreted, seriously... personal opinions may say *they're not that good* but look at all they did, they change music forever... every record you're listening to now only exists only because of them. those guys completely changed music. The exact same goes for nirvana, pretty much...altho they don't have the same impact that the beatles did... if it wasn't for nevermind, a lot of music wouldn't be around now, and everyone here would be totaly *stoked* on the new backstreet boys record.

Weezer, now there is a overrated band.

My theory is that music is often overrated because it is good (for example in the cases of The Beatles, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd), in which case "overrated" gets confused with "overplayed"

Except for in the case of RHCP. They are DEFINATLEY overrated. biggrin

Over-rated bands I'd say were..

Nirvana
Phish
The Grateful Dead
Not the Doors, but Jim Morrison specifically
Simon & Garfunkel
Nine Inch Nails
Sex Pistols (they get the credit but the Ramones started it and the Clash were better at it)

There are some bands I love but still think are a little overrated, like U2 and the Beatles. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Beatles, think they're the best songwriters ever, but damn, the way people talk you'd think they were the god-damned second coming or something. Just a group of four humans people, come on.

Who is it you people claim are "overrating" these bands?
Contemporary critics?
Radio DJs?
Your Friends?

In the case of most of these bands, its more "friends" who find these bands so goddamn great... for example, i can appreciate what the beatles supposedly did for rock and roll, but greatest albums of all time (recent rolling stone) give me a fucking break... and Floyd? ooh trippy... it fucking DISCO for christ's sake... you know how you can take Dark Side Of The Moon and play it with the Wizard of Oz? You can do the same thing with Saturday Night Fever...

i agree with morgan on the over-rated vs. over-plated issue. good point.

How are the beatle's overrated???? is it there guitar, bass, drums? vocals... all of which in my opinion were astronomical. What more amazing is hte interation between there instruments. That's not even touching on there creative genius as song writers and lyricists, perhaps the best ever. Perhaps rivaled only by simon and garfunkel in terms of lyrics.

Led zeppelin invented a style of music that is scene in every facet of modern rock-n-roll. Look up rocknroll in the dictionary, you'll find led zeppelin.

Pink Floyd, does anyone have a better overall sound than pink floyd, geez those guys could play. Not to mention the way they incorporated instruments into rock that hadn't been used before, leading the progressive rock movement with bands such as Yes, the Moody Blues, and Chicogo Transit Authority. and they have kick ass lyrics.

This thread makes me want to tear some people a proverbial new one.

Just because you don't LIKE a band that's given an incredble contribution to music and started whole new trends in music, doesn't mean they're "overrated"

It just means you have rotten taste. tongue

I would also like to know : overrated in comparison to WHAT? YOUR favourite bands? are you sure you're not making a judgement call that you can't make based on your tastes here? I mean, a lot of people on SG listen to bands i am not at all into, but i don't tell them their bands are "overrated", because i wouldn't know what i was talking about, and MY opinion is not golden.

I don't know about calling Phish overrated. They are very talented musicians. Personally I fucking hate their music.

What I would call them is the LUCKIEST fucking band on the face of the Earth. Jerry Garcia dies and they inherit a whole fan base.

I think the Doors were overrated though. all this talk about Jim Morrison being a great poet........you put me on 14 hits of acid and I'll write the same stuff. Lizard King, my ass

so now if someone thinks a band you like is overrated, they're wrong? we have "wrong" opinions? just a little confused...

led zepplin influential? most definitely... as good as their fans make them out to be? personally, don't think so...thus an "overrated" tag opinion'd by me...

this shouldn't be a thread defending any particular band...
