Not the best cover I've heard, but the Chili Peppers do a pretty good version of Fugazi's "Waiting Room"

Sublime - Summertime (Gershwin)

A. Is it a cover if it's a traditional tune like Mack the Knife or Tom Dooley?
B. Is it a cover if they really only two lines of a song?

Interesting fact: Summertime is the most recorded song ever.

Mack The Knife isn't a traditional tune. It was written by Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill for The Threepenny Opera.

Summertime is a standard. The Gerswhins wrote and composed it but they never themselves performed or recorded it as far as I know. Singers such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. sang the song, whereas groups like Sublime and The Fugees sampled it.

and why they aren't anywhere else on this list is beyond me.
Rockapella is arguably the best cover band in the world.

Any a capella cover song on a p2p network that isn't attributed to anyone is automatically Rockapella. I've seen no indication that either of those are Rockapella, nor any of the DMB songs floating about. And I they don't have the signature badass bass of Barry. There is no better low end in a capella.

Unless, of course, you know something I don't. And I'd love to know if you do. biggrin

Then there's the opposite of that rule: that about one in a hundred people actually attribute the Gourds' Gin and Juice to the Gourds. I've seen Phish, Blues Traveler, The Grateful Dead (WTF?), OAR, Garth Brooks, Dave Matthews Band, Barenaked Ladies, Hayseed Dixie, the friggin' Soggy Bottom Boys...
