I'm obsessed with cover songs. I could go on for pages, but these are some of the best.

Hi-Standard - California Dreamin'
Lunachicks - The Passenger, More Than a Feeling
Dweezil & Ahmet Zappa - Hit Me Baby One More Time
Gus - Don't Fear the Reaper
The Januaries - Paranoid (Black Sabbath)
Johnny Cash - One (U2)
Toadies - Luck Be a Lady
A New Found Glory - So Happy Together
MFatGG - Rocket Man, Phantom of the Opera, Nothing Compares to You, Only the Good Die Young, End of the Road
MSI - Bring the Pain
Mr. T Experience - Don't Go Breaking My Heart

Screaming Jay Hawkins - Whistling Past the Graveyard

If anyone has a punk cover of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up", I would be eternally grateful

I like their version of "Wild World"......but unfortunately, most of their covers don't have any personality. True to punk style, make the drums fast and tear up one chord over and over while screaming the melody faster. It's an instant punk cover!

This thread would be so much cooler if everyone added who the originals were by. That'd be good.

Elliott Smith - Thirteen (Big Star), Jealous Guy (John Lennon).
Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails), One (U2), I Won't Back Down (Tom Petty), The Mercy Seat (Nick Cave) [Of course, Cash could make any song his own].
Cat Power - Satisfaction (Rolling Stones).
Devo - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (Rolling Stones).
Urge Overkill - Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon (Neil Diamond).
Nick Drake - Don't Think Twice, It's Alright (Bob Dylan).
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan).
Rage Against The Machine - Ghost Of Tom Joad (Bruce Springsteen).
Jimmy Little - My Father's House (Bruce Springsteen), Into Temptation (Crowded House), Under The Milky Way Tonight (The Church) [Little is another guy who can own any song].
Gary Jules - Mad World (Tears For Fears).
Ben Kweller - Ice Ice Baby (Vanilla Ice).
The Doors - Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) (Kurt Weill).
The White Stripes - One More Cup Of Coffee (Bob Dylan),
Cake - Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (Sandra Dee...I think?). I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor).
Machine Gun Fellatio - Chase The Dragon (Beasts Of Bourbon).

Yep, I have heard the original, and I think Gary Jules' version is significantly better. The original wastes a beautiful line like 'the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had' by surrounding it with stupid horns and synth drums and shit. I'm not against the Tears For Fears aesthetic, but I don't think it suits the song like the eerie, emotive awesomeness of Jules' version.

Yep, I've heard the original.

From my Belfast days, "Whiskey in the Jar" by Thin Lizzy and "Shakin' All Over" by Horslips.

"Summertime Blues" (from "Live at Leeds")by the Who

Any Pearl Jam cover.I most especially like "Last Kiss". Having lost a girlfriend to a road accident, this song is haunting. It is also a vehicle to trigger great memories years later.

"Because the Night" by Patti Smith or 10,000 Maniacs.

Ben Harper(witnessed live) "All Along the Watchtower".

Social Distortion " Ball and Chain" or "Ring of Fire" ,from Live at the Roxy.
