It's even worse when the secret song is good, and you have to fast forward through the silence to hear it.

papa roaches First album comes to mind. The hidden track was easily the best song in it.

Yes but it is rather cool when your about to leave a bar and you select the last track of an album on the jukebox to submit the fuck heads in there to 15 minutes of silence before they can get another track on muahahahaha

They Might Be Giant's 1996 album "Factory Showroom" has a secret track before the first track, I've known people who owned the CD for years and didn't know about it.

But overall I agree, the secret track concept is kind of tired. It's especially annoying when trying to copy songs onto your computer.

"Raise Your Fists" - Just played on my MP3 shuffle bonanza...and then i forgot that there was even music on (needless to say, there wasn't it had since gone into silence...) and not half a minute ago...Someone coughed and started talking...I almost shit myself...

The best hidden song is on the Red Elvises live album "Your Favourite Band".
It has it's own track so it doesn't piss off you too much. Don't see why it was "hidden" in the first place though.

What about secret booklets hidden behind the disc case? I only know of Kid A and Coma White, but there's gotta be others...

Another bad thing is when you want to burn a mixed cd and you want either the last song without the hidden track or the hidden track but not the last song and you can't separate the two.

The only Beck album I'll let play through to the hidden track is "Mutations." It's a bit fucked up but there's actually SOME element of a song, intersperesed with random 60s-flavored bits. Fades out with a wonderful Mellotron part. Wish Beck would use Mellotrons more often...

Don't ever say SG never taught you nothin'.

I concur. Tracks hidden after dead air are terribly silly. I'm not really sure what the point of them is, either... secrets for the fans?

I suspect that sometimes it's just to add time padding onto otherwise quite short albums. Another 10 mins on a 30 minute album can really justify spending the $12 for an album. tongue

Off of the top of my head, in Sarah McLachlan's Possession, after the final track there's a lovely, solo piano version of the title track that's equal to the studio version.

Thats why records are the best. Nothing is hidden. Except sometimes you get the little message tween the grooves at the end.

try again.

Mr Bungle did it on the album Disco Valente.

On the vinyl version there's a double groove that starts about an inch or so away from the edge. There's a hidden song there...

Secret tracks are a pain in the ass. The new Wilco ends with a bunch of dead air preceeding about 5 minutes of a monotonous squeal. It wasn't even remotely interesting the first time through; I dread how I'll feel upon subsequent listens.

I think if bands want to have a bunch of space before a hidden track they should have the dead air as its own track and then the extra song as its own seperate track. This way if you listen to the album straight through you can have the interim silence and if you want to get to the song you can just track advance instead of fast forwarding.

I am a fan of hidden songs at the beginnings of albums though. I remember back in high school I heard there was a Less Than Jake album that had one but the only time I've personally encountered one is on the album En Garde by Criteria (Steve Pederson's band after White Octave and Cursive). If you rewind prior to track 1, there is a goofy hip hop song with Steve Pederson and Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes rapping. Something about a house of fun. Really entertaining and, better yet, completely optional.

I really fucking hate the hidden song on Coral Fang by The Distillers. Just like 7 minutes of fucking horrible ass distortion and then that kickass song at the end. it's not worth the pain, really.

Hidden tracks are a little too "artsy-fartsy" for me. And, can we please do away with "skits" on CDs, as well. I don't want to hear a musician trying to be a comedian or actor in an ill-advised 30 second scene. Just play yer fuckin' songs and be done with it, already.

on my copy of pennywise's unknown road there is a secret track that comes on about a minute-and-a-half after the last track... the freaky thing is that it makes the counter on my cd player go backwards!
