Metallica has been in the buisness for 24 years. people who shit on them havent been in it a day. the real threat from Napster was a hit on catalog sales, and Met had just managed to rape Electra for the best catalog sales percentage in the history of the buisness. you know who sells the most catalog sales?

1-The Beatles
2-Metallica

morons can rant and rave all they want, metallica houses there website guys in their complex, and opens up every faccet of their life to the fans. so blah blah blah about The Damned and whatever else anyone may say in this thread. There's never been 4 guys who plug in and do it any better.

ps. St Anger is the best thrash metal album in the last 10 years

Oh those poor little millionaires! Thanks... I needed a good laugh. By the way, I've been in "the Business" myself for a while now but hey... nice try.

Well Metallica has been making records and touring for over 20 years, and according to a lot of people they may not have made a single decent album in their career but they're still going. Which tells me their pockets still need more padding or THEY LOVE TO DO IT TOO.

Questionable on the latter.

yes, Im sure you can relate to Metallica. and since when is it a crime to have huge finacial gain from something you've worked your whole life for?

and hey, Im glad i could supply you with a laugh, but there are people out there who are sick of Met being the most scrutinized band on the internet.

A) I CAN'T relate to Metallica. Never claimed I did... nor would I want to.

B) I never once thought it was a "crime" to reap financial success from your given artform. The Rolling Stones are one of my favorite bands so that kills your point there. It's just the way an artist HANDLES their success that I was referring to.

C) I dunno... call me crazy, but maybe the reason they're the most scrutinized band on the net might have something to do with their witch-hunt on file sharing? And don't lecture me about how bad the "artist" gets ripped off by file sharing. I know better.

their best loved songs are not covers.

the statement that they gave Cliff shit for blasting Misfits is so rediculous that it does not justify response.

I'm done with this thread. metallica bash ad nasium. they're playing Dyers Eve live again, and I'm going in October for the 12th time.

i always loved metallica.

i forgave them that 'load' was utter bilge, i forgave them that 'reload' somehow actually managed to be worse.

the moment they bitched about napster, the day they decided that piddling little things like fans who paid for their fucking existances, no longer mattered. then i realised they were nothing more than the corporate whores they'd always railed against.

seems lars forgot the days he was busy taping diamond head albums for his friends was every bit a copyright violation as those checking out the new metallica albums.

fuck them. up the arse. with a red spikey rubber dick.

that day, the band who'd always tried to cross new boundaries had become dire straits, only with even worse hair styles.

the metallica i loved to hear and watch died in the early 90's, the silly fuckers fannying around the globe now might as well be a covers group.

I. Fucking. Love. You.

It's just the cool thing to do now. Some people are still bitter about the napster fiasco, or that everything after ...and justice for all wasn't "metal" enough.

I still dig their stuff now, even if they don't have much credibility left. But who cares ? There isn't an artist out there who hasn't sold a part their soul for something at some point in their career or another.

It certainly seems fashionable to bash Metallica these days, it seems that happens to a lot of bands. Wait for it and people will start loving them again.

Glad there's a few people here that see it my way, I know that there are some people that genuinely don't like Metallica. But there are a hell of a lot that slag them because it's the cool thing to do.

I won't delve into why I think Metallica's become a parady of the band the used to be (everyone's done that already). Rather, I'm going to say something positive.

I disagree, some of Metallica's best loved cover songs are just great songs -- its just that Metallica had the resources to make that stuff sound good.

Using your example of the Misfits ...

Danzig wrote some brilliant stuff with the Misfits -- and recorded it on a boom box with some make-shift equipment they were using. The Misfits didn't have the money, or the knowledge to make their stuff sound good in the late 70's. Then Metallica came along with that huge massively produced sound they had, which sonically did a lot of justice to the Misfits and a lot of the other bands they covered.

To continue on saying some positive about Metallica, in light of all this negative.

I will give Metallica snaps for in the 80's is they went out of their way to try to bring the bands they worshipped to the mainstream too.

Its no secret, who some of their favorite then unknown bands were in the 80's. In any given group picture of them pre-1990 you'll see one of them wearing a shirt of some (then) obscure punk / metal band.

When they first started to play huge shows, they let Samhain open for them so they can share some of their success. Its no secret the whole band worshiped Danzig (not just Cliff and James), they wanted to see Danzig's then band "make it" too (and I'm sure Danzig is not complaining about the royaltee checks he's getting for all Misfits covers they did).

They made it a point to tour with bands they liked and respected. Not to dwell on Danzig, but Metallica without question helped bring him into the spotlight.

Even after they stopped playing thrash metal in the early 1990's, they convinced the Anti-Nowhere League to come out of retirement to open for their stadium tours in Europe. I'm sure at the time they could have had any of those big at the time grunge bands play with them, they wanted to see a band they liked get some recognition too.

But yeah -- even though I'm not a big supporter of Metallica's music and new image these days. I do think they did do some good with their success.

The snare drum on that album is by itself enough to qualify the whole thing as their most heinous abortion to date. I've yet to meet the drummer who doesn't want to cry when they hear the sound of that gawd-awful pingy assed drum with the snare disengaged. Plus every song was a stinker. Sorry, that's just how I feel about it.
