I really think this whole DJ Danger Mouse thing is getting out of control.

For some reason I can't help but think that since one DJ made a good record by sample two vastly different records that anyone can do it. You know, take two records and genres that sound nothing alike, blend them together, and create your own masterpiece.

they've been doing that since the late 70's. only recently (about a year before The Grey Album was released) did the 'mash-up' thing get HUGE. download something by 2 Many Dj's or Soulwax and thats pretty recently done and damn cool (The Stooges 'No Fun' with Salt N Pepa's 'Push It').

Grandmaster Flash brought it into the mainstream with 'Grandmaster Flash and the Wheels Of Steel' which is Queen and Blondie cut up together. 'Rappers Delight' is basically them rapping over a cut-up Chic song with a few more beats thrown in.

the Dj DangerMouse thing is only really a natural progression. its damn well done, but its hardly a new thing.

That's just sampling -- rappers do it all the time and it is an art form. In the case of what you mentioned they're making a beat from an existing song, and rapping overit. I'm talking about taking two existing bodies of work and just crossing it together.

For instance first came the Grey album, then came ...

-- The Black and Blue Album (the Grey Album + Weezer's Blue Album)
-- Black in Black Album (Jay Z + AC/DC)
-- Red and Black Album (King Crimson + Jay Z)

I don't want to see this same trend happening with Radiohead.

Not my thing. But it does remind me of a version of The Wall that Luther Wright and the Wrongs did all bluegrassed up. That was killer.

you're my new best friend. i love the Rebuild The Wall album. biggrin
"Well, howdy!"
"Hey! is there anybody in there?....."
Goodbye Blue Sky was the best though.

I did some googling and found the video for their Another Brink in the Wall (Part 2), if anyone wants to check it out.

um, how is this the same thing as the grey album? this isn't radiohead mixed with country and western, it's radiohead covered in a country and western style. and people have been doing that for years too, go listen to weird al's alternative polka - or any of them he's done over the years.

I would love to hear Thom Yorke's comment on this lol. These guys have done a nice job. I wouldn't say great, but it's a nice remix. I suprised myself singing along with the song lol

I just listened to the marching band version of Paranoid Android. It is very Brian Wilson/Beach Boys SMiLE-esque. If you dig that then you should check this out. : )

No, you're wrong... the Grey Album wasn't first by a long shot, but more frequently it's done just one track at a time and called bootlegging.

Granular synthesis (which is what lets you change a song's pitch and tempo independantly without it sounding like crap) has been around for 40 or 50 years and inexpensively accessible since the late 80's. Bootlegging has been around for at least a ten years and has really started to pick up among underground/indie hip-hop and electronica producers in the past 3 or 4 years as the required technology has become more and more common.

The Grey Album is just the tip of a decades-old iceberg, and rodeohead still doesn't have anything to do with it!
