According to this article by Rolling Stone, producer Jon Brion tells us that Fiona Apple's latest effort, "Extraordinay Machine", has been shelved by SONY.

Sony has yet to find the magic song on Brion's latest production, Apple's new record. The album has been finished for months but sits on the shelves at the label as, Brion says, execs search for a single.
"It's a done record," he says. "They'll take whatever amount of time they'll take deciding how to promote it. And who knows? Those things are a black hole."

There is a petition online that you can sign to try and help Fiona out. Sign it.

No, thanks! smile

I've never seen someone look as ridiculous on stage as Fiona Apple does.

I've been waiting for the next Fiona album forever. Her first two are among my all-time favorites. This is news is super-sad for me.

You know, I kinda liked her a few years ago, but I guess I don't really care that much about a new album. Oh well....

I think I liked one or two songs off her first album and the Beatles cover she did was alright, but her album can stay locked away for a long time.

When The Sony Hits The Fiona She Thinks Like A Beggar What She Knows Throws The Blows When She Goes To The Fight And They Won The Whole Thing 'Fore She Entered The Ring There's No Body To Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand And Remember That Welfare Is The Lowest Of Low And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where To Land And If When You Fall It Won't Matter You'll Eat Ramen, Cuz But You'll Know That You're Right.

I think Fiona Apple is for people who listen to Tori Amos albums and say "I wish she were a bit more self-pitying."

Nah, she's for people who think Jewel is "deep and poetic", and Alanis Morrissette is "radical".

To be honest, I enjoyed her first album.... Then she did that rant at the Grammys or whatever, and I saw her act like a total... not nice person on just about every TV show that had her on in an other-than-singing capacity. Then she comes out with a second album whose title is a 100 word horrible poem, and the whole world stopped giving a shit.

Curse of the "Best New Artist" Grammy.

I happen to listen to "When the Pawn..." quite frequently. Considering that I have over six hundred CDs and access in my house to over ten thousand records and 45s, I guess that means I like her very much.

Yeah, I wasn't really that big on her first album, but somehow "When the pawn..." really stuck with me. I don't know if I just heard it first at a time in my life when I was really receptive of it or what, but I really like that album a lot.

I'd be curious to see what the new one sounds like, but I'm not outraged enough to sign a petition. I do think that it's lame for Sony to keep it under wraps until they can wrestle a single out of it, but hey, that's one of the risks of signing with a major label.

I'll fess up and admit I kind of dig some of her stuff -- many years ago a friend let me tag along with them to one of her shows (she got free tickets through her job).

to cut to the chase fiona bursted out in tears after about half a song and stormed off the stage -- it was great !
