Grab a random band's album.

Randomly choose a song.

You have a 50% chance that it is a depressing relationship song.

Ha! Delicious! Oi! to you as well, I say! I tried that method and the song was GG Allin's "Castration Crucifixtion"... so I tried it again.... and got "Ass Fucking Butt Sucking Cunt Licking Masturbation"... a classic.... and then I realized:

That guy's theory.... IS EXACTLY RIGHT! 2 FOR 2! How did he do that??

Nothing like America's "Lonely People" to drive you nuts. Just the supreme wimp-rock band of the 70s trying to instill some false hope in you, when all they really do is make you want to jump off a bridge.

I find Social Distortion works pretty well. You also might look into Mark Lanegan and/or The Screaming Trees. Lush is pretty good for that as well.

Later covered by The Bens. I've yet to hear their version, yet, because the song in and of itself brings back too many sad memories.

Dylan-Blood on the Tracks

While this is generally considered to be THE quintessential Dylan breakup album, I actually prefer Nashville Skyline for sad songs from him. Yeah, it's a little country, but it's also one of the few albums where his voice sounds normal, and also Blood on the Tracks tends to sacrifice lyrics for emotion a little bit. But Tangled Up in Blue is a brilliant song.

Also, I'd definately reccommend Bright Eyes - The Calendar Hung Itself.
