Also, "No One Here Gets Out Alive" (The Doors) never gets old. I've owned the same old beat up paperback copy since Junior High (before many of you were born).

Does a book about a genra count? Even if it doesnt, I'm listing this anyway... because it's one of the best books I've ever read

Lords of Chaos; The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground.

If you like Black Metal and burning churches... you will love this book biggrin

I second that. One of the best books ever, and well informed.
I really didn't know about all the in fighting that took place in the scene. I have read the book to pieces twice.
I need a new copy.

Here's my top music related books I've read in no particular order ...

Lords of Chaos

The Dirt -- Even if you don't care for Motley Crue much, the book is still great.

Our Band Could Be Your Life

Get In the Van -- Henry Rollins's diaries from when he when he was in Black Flag (the audio book is quite good too).

Moreso about the man behind the band than the band itself, but Deborah Curtis' Touching From A Distance is invaluable to any Joy Division fan, whether casual or devoted.

And yeah, Jon Savage's England's Dreaming is manna, too.

I can't wait for Simon Reynold's book on post-punk to be released.

I don't see it it fits either of these judgements. First, Savage is more than happy to point out shortcoming of different groups, and how the "punk" movement, as it started, failed miserably.

And it's only pretentious if he flaunts the information he knows. He doesn't - just states the facts, plain and simple, which are more then entertaining/fascinating on their own.

Alright, let me begin this by saying that I love the Pistols and I love the Clash.
Now, with that said, the reason I say biased and pretentious is because he smooches both of those bands asses to embarrassing extremes while writing off other equally important bands of the era (the Damned, Sham 69 come to mind) as unimportant yobboes.

Well, I don't think he writes off the Damned. He praises the one album the put out worthy of praise, and tells it pretty much like it is with the rest of their stuff. I doubt you'd find many serious music critics out there who would defend much of the Damned's back catalogue.

And, well, to be frank, Sham 69 were unimporntant yobboes. Of the worst kind. I'd rather listen to the Not Sensibles.
