is anyone else disgusted by the new tagline that metalcore and emocore has recieved as of late screamo? i thought it was jsut gonna b a one time thing when i saw it in a guitar world artical, then i saw it in alternative press, and now i don't know what's up... why is this word being circulated? it's really no better than using the word emocore... infact, emocore sounds less retarded/sissy, and screamo still has the word emo in it practically so i don't see the difference... what the fuck is up here?

It's been around a bit longer than that, but yes it is the stupidest genre classification ever.

The original "emo" bands were hardcore bands. Sometime around the emergence of The Promise Ring and Jimmy Eat World people began to refer to wimpy pop-punk as emo. People who were into that kind of emo invented "screamo" as a kind of derisive term for emo hardcore bands.

This is mostly irritating to me, only because the only thing that TRULY seems to "define" being "emo" is specifically and aggressively denying that you are in fact "emo". Therefore, seeing as the music industry bulshit has never truly decided to lay down an actual framework for one genre, it pissed me off to have a spin-off genre which bites off of the already ambiguous label.
-One heard from the lead singer of an indie-rock band (circles and squares?):
"How many emo kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?"
"FUCK YOU dude, I'm not EMO!",

Screamo has been around for 10 years. Just like calling shit like The Get Up Kids "emo", calling Glassjaw and THrice "screamo" is just an attempt to sell bad music to stupid kids. We all know Glassjaw and Boy Sets Fire and The Get Up Kids are just rock bands, don't try to repackage it and church it up. Misusing a trendy genre name to make tired music look fresh is just insulting.

Arguabley bands like Antioch Arrow, Swing Kids, Spankorzo, Constantine Sankathi, Current etc.. were playing "screamo" in like 1991. Even though it's not really called that anymore, real "screamo" band are still around. Song Of Zarathustra, Blood Brothers, Mara'kate, Pg. 99, Deadseraphim, To Dream Of Autumn, etc... Just like anything else it's just a clever "underground" term misused to sell records.

I wouldn't classify Pg. 99 as "screamo". And you forgot Orchid, Usurp Synapse, and Saetia as screamo bands... too bad all of them are gone now. But check out Hot Cross and Off Minor for more good screamo-core.

one more thing... screamo to me seemed to add elements of grind into it... usually screamo was super fast with blast beats...

Seriously, if someone ever made a chart with all the different classifications it could wallpaper the Sears tower....

i miss when alternative used to mean something, and people refused to be "grunge", and now people refuse to be "emo"... again, even though screamo is a way to call you emo without saying emo....

and fyi to all you indie kids.... indie is the genre formerly known as alternative... that's right.. it's all teh same shit...

also.. there's no such thing as rock... just cos a band uses guitars, and plays verse chorus verse songs, and has a lead singer with some mojo, doesn't mean it's rock... rock music stopped existing with aerosmith... you know... when they stopped being cool with get a grip and just wrote pop songs....

ps: "screamo" is a stupid name, but the genre is still cool.... but what the fuck does thursday, and poison teh well have to do with each other? one makes me wanna cry, and the other makes me wanna kill people

fucking screamo...man. such a wierd thing now that the term "screamo" is applied to bands that sound nothing like the bands that were originally dubbed "screamo". i think that "screamo" as a word is kind of funny, its almost antithetical to "emo", its just easier than saying screamy chaotic hardcore with grind and punk tendancies....boysetsfire not=screamo, glassjaw not=screamo, poison the well def not=screamo, thursday, well you get the trend.....bands like orchid, and such, but a lot of those bands, like pg. 99 have gone way past that into strait grind, or just wierd as hell stuff, look at racebannon, thier earlier stuff is more straight forward screamy shit, but they're newer stuff is way beyond that....believe it or not, the heyday of screamo is done....i think..all the good bands broke up, and the others just changed styles, i wouldnt really consider the early bands like heroin, antioch arrow, swing kids "screamo", they def. were the predecessors though...i always consider the above mentioned bands "early" nineties hardcore...they were all a lot more rock, and less grind/metal......but its like arguing over apples and oranjes. good is good, bad is bad. call it what you will...that was just my tirade on the subject. later.
james.

indie isn't altertanive rock. Indie means an independent label like drive thru records or Espo records. And Screamo is is toatal shit, any Emo kid can tell you that.

i think "emocore" is a lame term anyway. people tend to lump any hardcore band that has a singer doing both melodic and screams to be in some way "emo".

since when did indie have solely to do with the label? drive thru, for example, has a buch of shit pop bands on their label...

Indie always ment independent. Fuck rap can be called indie if produced by a independent label, It has nothing to do with the type of music.

um... drive thru records is partially owned by MCA, so they are about as "indie" as Sub Pop, which is 51% owned by Elektra....

And talking shit about screamo and then saying Drive Thru is indie is the stupidest thing I've ever heard... pull your head out of your ass and realize that every band that sounds like Blink probably sucks...

the thing about this whole screamo thing that annoys my balls off is that everytime some new term comes up, everyone wants to describe their band as it. my friends and i used to make shit up and spread it around on tour just to fuck with kids and pass time in the van. my old band used to get lumped in with that whole screamo thing but i never thought of us as very emo unless you think uranus, reversal of man, and his hero is gone is emo cause that's who we were always compared to. of course, rev of man was probably one of the first bands i heard get the dreaded screamo term. i dunno, pg99 never seemed too emo to me either and we did a split together, but almost every hardcore band from the past 4 years has a split with those fucking guys.
