^nope, pretty much the pioneers of heavy metal. 40spokes is right on target there, masters of reality, Black Sabbath, Volume IV (aka Children of the Grave), yeah, they rocked, and rocked harder than anyone. <---

Your opinion on Black Sabbath is probably going to hinge on what you define as heavy metal. Some discard the early, slow, plodding, thunderous approach because they prefer faster, more aggressive forms of metal (ie it REALLY started with Motorhead). Each to their own of course. Those first two albums will forever be the definitive templates of early heavy metal. The song "Black Sabbath" is still one of the most chilling pieces of music ever recorded.

Even the following four albums, although not as consistent have plenty of classic tunes...

"Sweet Leaf"
"Wheels of Confusion"
"Supernaut"
"Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"
"Sabbra Cadabra"
"Hole In the Sky"
"The Thrill of it All"

Some were turned off by the fact that by "Bloody Sabbath/Sabotage" they were turning into a heavy prog-rock band. (Rick Wakeman played on some of those tracks after all) Can't comment on the last two Ozzy/Sabbath albums because I don't own them/have heard to little of them.

This is true for anyone really, and my opinion is just that, subjective. I got into Black Sabbath before motorhead, and motorhead was I'd say quite an influence on the punk scene if they liked that or not... I can still play "Ace of Spades" and get people going bonkers... I still wonder why lemmy doesn't get rid of those damn moles, maybe it holds the secret key to his badassness... he's one guy that I wouldn't want to party with, simply because I would probably end up dead of some sort of alcohol poisoning.

For better or for worse, "Changes" was one of the first "power ballads," or at least one of the first overly sentimental songs by an overly heavy band (if you discount "Thank You" or "Tangerine" by Led Zep.)

i think blue cheer is credited with the first "heavy" sound

they're the reason people say heavy metal, dude. them and steppenwolf. but sabbath rocked harder. and lemmy's moles DO contain his magic. that's why there's two of them. just like tony iommi's missing fingers allow him to shred so hard...

black sabbath were the heavy metal pioneers, parents, whatever! they rock! "masters of reality" is killer, that "into the void" riff is so heavy!
"volume iv" is also insane, there's nothing as heavy as "cornucopia" and "supernaut". you're right daddy, that's killer stuff. i don't dislike any sabbath albums, even "technical ecstasy" and "never say die". "johnny blade" contains a really heavy section!

no pioneering heavy metal! Obviously rock was well on it's way 20 or so years prior.

So was I, but at that age I wasn't yet into collecting rare imports. That's cool, though... learned something new about a band I've loved for decades.

You know that album title, I don't know what it says down there, but its all nonsense, its not latin at all... it's some amalgamation of different words some latin and other things best not even to bother thinking about.

Blue Cheer were lound, in a sort of ripoff way, their sound wasn't really considered 'new', but it certainly was loud, heavy, and the requisit sloppy.

edit: whoops, the single for Summertime Blues looks exactly like the album it appears on the afformentioned nonsense phrase: Vincebus Eruptum....
