great. now i am even more confused.

Forgive my unoriginality, but I think this should clear things up for you: (copy and pasted from http://www.black-wings.com ): "AFI was formed when three 15 year old friends (Davey Havok, Vic Chalker and Mark Stopholse) decided to start a band. If you didn’t like fishing and those kind of things there wasn’t really much else to do in Ukiah, where they lived. Mark invited his friend Adam Carson to joined the band since they needed a drum player.

It didn’t take much longer than a couple of month and Vic Chalker left the band, Geoff Kresge took the place as their new bas player. After the high school graduating the band split, because they where all moving to different places. Davey moved to Berkley, Adam to Santa Cruz, Mark to southern California and Geoff moved to New Jersey.

But during the Christmas break they got together and did a concert at the Phoenix Theatre. The concert went so good that the gang decided to recorded it and released it as "Eddie Picnic's All Wet", they also decided to start AFI again.
After that they released some new 7" but this time not on their own "Key Lime Pie Records" but on "Wedge Records" and "Wingnut Records". Other east bay bands such as the Swingin’ Utters and punk legends Rancid noticed them and took them on tour! After the Swingin’ Utter tour they released their first LP called "Answer That And Stay Fashionable", this record was released on "Wingnut Records".

Shortly after that the band was contracted on Dexter Holland’s (Offspring singer) label "Nitro Records" at this time (1996) they released their second LP "Very Proud Of Ya". After that they went out touring with Sick Of It All by the end of the touring Geoff decided to leave the band because he simply was tired of touring and didn’t think it was funny anymore. This is when they borrowed Hunter Burgan from The Force to play on their new album "Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes" Hunter did this for the cost of 666$. It wasn’t until they released "A Fire Inside EP" in 1998 that Hunter was an official member, after this EP Mark was asked to leave the band. It was old time friend Jade Puget who became their new guitar player.
Jade has also played in Influence 13 with Nick 13 and Geoff Kresge.

In may 1999 they released "Black Sails In The Sunset" this is the record where the "new" AFI sound became more clear, they have already shown some changes in Shut your… but this record was the real evidence for it! The next full-length was to be their greatest success yet, "The Art Of Drowning" was released in September 2000 and sold over 65 000 copies!! After this they went out on a tour that lasted for almost 1½ year!

In 2002 AFI signed a record contract for Dream Works, and the band had already started to work on their new album "Sing The Sorrow". Which hit the stores in 2003-03-11 and went straight up to number 5 in the US top ten. "

They started out whiney punk sounding, developed into a more traditional punk sounding band, and once Jade joined, they started to develop more darker undertones to their sound.

AFI is far from emo.
you could say every band has an emo side to them.

Even the hardest bands have love songs its soo taboo.
