I'm interested in knowing more about what artists you think are the best female performers. Have at it. I enjoy Ani Difranco, Bjork and PJ Harvey..among others...What do you think? (I also enjoy Portishead a lot too)

The ones who just think of themselves as artists and not "female artists".

I'm not trying to say anything by this... I hope you know that..I am just trying to get people's opinions...that's all. biggrin I find it hard to find female artists out there that I actually enjoy that haven't been created by the music industry completely so i'm just getting opinions. ya know? They don't have to define themselves as "female artists"...I just had to come up with a name for the thread thing.

I guess I'll be the first on this thread to say Joan Jett. To me, she is the epitome of Rock 'n Roll. Also in that vein, I'll include Ms. Jett's main inspiration... Suzi Quatro.

I really tried not to post that, but it's just a slight pet peeve of mine and my neurosis got the better of me. I understand wanting to make a distinction between the average plastic mold fresh "Diva" and legitamate female artists. Unfortunately they're more difficult to track down then the prior. Some of my favorites currently are:

Ana Oxygen
Mirah
Erase Errata
Free Kitten
Cat Power

Also worthy of mention:

Aimee Mann (solo)
Kat Arthur
Laurie Anderson
Charlotte Caffey
Exene Cervenka (already mentioned, but can't overstate it)
Siouxsie

Edited to add: Patricia Morrison (How the HELL did I let her slip?)
