I've been going through the grueling process of converting my older CDs to mp3 format, lameENC encoder, @ 192... Unless it's a colectable, rare, or something I hold dear (brian eno collection, Aphex Twin) or an Import... I'm thinking of just ditching my CDs.... I love my Vinyl, and I keep that, because god knows when we'll be melting that lot for raw crude oil...

I love clicking on a folder and hitting play, I love easily compiling a lit of favourite tracks... Do I really need that Soupy Sales sings Teen Hits CD ????

MP3s and AACs sound perfectly fine to me. I use to have a cd player in my car, but now I just use my iPod.

Like people who love the feel and smell of new vinyl, I still like being able to buy new cd's, complete with artwork and liner notes, etc. And I don't really like the idea of substituting a good stereo with my computer and a pair of speakers, which seems to have happened to most kids a year or two beyond when I put together the component system that I still have.

Computers & downloading are good digging up new music before it's released (I've been listening to an e-card of the new Killswitch Engage record all day), being able to hear one song from a band you might otherwise never have heard, or to weed out all the crap without having to spend your money. But I still think records are not just music, but the whole package...and if nothing else it seems sad that something like album artwork, that lots of bands put lots of effort into in connection with their records, is being totally tossed aside...

well said. it really is the whole package. just like seeing a band live would suck if you only heard them and couldn't see them.

and yes, component systems with big speakers is the only way to listen to music. and in STEREO. i'm sick of surround. music=stereo, movies=surround.

I absolutely love CDs.

The tangile format makes the experience that much more visceral...having something in your hands, having cover artwork...I think it's all important.

I like to know HOW much music I have, and I like to know that I paid for it.

I like CDs. I'm not anywhere near the point of getting an iPOD or the like. And I have a cassette player in my car, which is haphazardly connected to my discman. Without cd's, I'd have to listen to the radio or the Enigma tape from 4th grade.

Amen. It's all about the whole experience, whether with CDs or vinyl. The ritual of choosing from your library this unassuming yet magical artifact that when fitted into the machinery produces something sublime like the White Album or Beethoven's Ninth or "All Tomorrow's Parties"... clicking around in your MP3 player just isn't the same. It's like fast food compared to a big, sumptuous, expensive restaurant dinner; or like masturbation in the shower compared to really good sex with another person.

MP3s are useless to me. A dollar a song, or stealing, is just not going to cut it when I could get a punk compilation with 35 songs on it for 6 dollars. Besides, discmans are cheaper than Ipods.

Agree, theres something way more than just "new music" going on when you buy a CD. Its an experience for all the senses (what, you don't lick your new cds to see if they taste right?).
Going to the record store is a good way to kill an hour or two in and of itself. Besides running around trying to remember what cds you told youself you were gonna get a half hour ago when you left, just walk around and listen to people's conversations. Usually you'll learn about some great bands this way. Maybe even make some friends. Walk over to the budget rack and just a buy a random CD for whatever reason (cool band name/artwork/whatever)
When you think about it that way...an MP3 player jusst feels like...cheating.......something to be associated with skinny white guys in Italian suits with the dork knob hair cuts that run around in a really expensive cars....
Thad being said, i love my iRiver, cuz carrying my entire music library in the mall, changing cds every 5 minutes got annoying. biggrin

cds are still the major music distribution medium, and will be for a while. Remember, the number of people with MP3 players is relatively small, and the number of people with Jukebox MP3 players(like the iPod and its ilk) is even smaller. I have a 30 gig MP3 player and still buy CDs. I just rip em onto my computer and dump em onto the MP3 player. I'd be a fool to get rid of my CD collection. Even if you negate the sentimental, artistic and/or collector's value, think about how much money you've spent on your collection. Now think about what the depreciation on that collection will be if you sell them. Not pretty is it?

Don't get me wrong. By god, I buy my share of CDs, mostly from rare labels like Important or V/Vm, and mp3's don't sound like shit at all, if you encode them right... 192 and above is nearly indecernable, and keep in mind it was Neil Young, (along with Steve Albini) who decried the invention of the CD.

Hell, I bought my first CD Throbbing Gristle's CD1 before I even owned a player.

I worked in a store when they had those heinous and unnessiary boxes around the CDs... Plastic isn't forever... sooner or later these resources run dry... Maybe not in my lifetime, but someday, I predict that all music will be digital only.

edit: oh, and along with everyone else at the time, a lot of us hated the CD format, because the artwork on the CD was so small it didn't have the same effect as an LP, and I always buy LPs from WARP and labels that cater to my needs, sometimes I'll even buy the CD as well just to preserve the vinyl.

Just look at the LP's for Boards of Canada's Music Has the Right to Children, and especially Geogaddi. Oh and the amazing 4 record set for Druqks by Aphex Twin.
