I'm not "into" music like some of the people on the site but I was reading through the Fred Durst "depreciation" thread and I started to wonder where the whole Rap-Rock genre started? What is generally considered to be the dawn of the genre?

What would you consider good examples? Bad examples?

Good examples: Faith No More and Anthrax.

Bad examples: Pretty much everything after.

Hmm, the start? That's a tough one to pinpoint. There are a few bands credited with influencing the genre, particularly Faith No More and Jane's Addiction. Actually, Jane's Addiction might not be credited with the creation of the genre, but a lot of Rap Rock bands claim them as an influence, and they did do a lot to fuse funk and rock. Also, Red Hot Chili Pepers had a lot to do with it to.

As far as good examples, they are few and far between. The best example, by far, is Rage Against the Machine. Incubus can be good too, although they're not EXACTLY rap rock. A lot of rap beats, but not a lot of rap style lyrics.

Can't think of any other examples of good bands off the top of my head, but I'll try to think of more.

Anthrax was the earliest one that I could think of at first, but after a little more thought I came up with Faith No More and Primus. Wasn't sure about the time frames though.

I like the concept, rap and rock are both powerful musical mediums, but a lot of the shit out there seems formulaic. I think it's one of those genre's that anyone can do, but very few do well.

Exactly! Mainstream rappers are bad enough, but for some reason, people tend to have even lower standards for rock-rappers and let them get away with such crap.

I think they just put out another one.

I guess I can let it slide if you admit it's a guilty pleasure. There are many bands I like that I can fully admit are horrible bands.

The lines between rap rock and funk rock tend to be kind of blurry. Primus is generally classified as funk rock.

Rapworld.com's History of Rap says: Def Jam released RUN D.M.C's debut album "Raising Hell". It sold 3 million copies in the US alone and was the first rap band to cross rap with rock (Aerosmith - "Walk This Way") and feature on the front cover of Rolling stone.

Say what you will about Puff Daddy... but the Nine Inch Nails remix of "Victory" is some of the best rockin' rap I've ever heard.

Followed closely by System of a Down covering Wu-Tang's "Shame on a Nigga".

There is promise for this kind of symbiosis, but the rappers and the rockers have to learn what works. Just putting a whole bunch of guitar noise behind a rapper doesn't work (see the Judgment Night soundtrack). But there're a few good examples on the Loud Rocks! compilation.

Yeah, well, I haven't been a fan of this whole genre since a few years ago when I was turned on to much better music and realised how stupid I was. (Not to say that the entire genre is bad, I've always said there is no such thing as an inherently bad genre of music.) Thus, "Walk This Way" wasn't to prevalent in my head.

Run-DMC is one of those bands who really aren't very good, but you can forgive them and enjoy their music because they were pretty much the first ones to do it. Aerosmith sucks, but they have a good few songs, this being one of them.
