ballad of a teenage queen
new orleans parish prison
papa played the dobro
solitary man
big river
country trash

there's just too many great ones, and no bad ones at all. it's been said that when johnny cash covered a song, it instantly became his... so even though he didn't write all of them, they all are so dang good.

I See A Darkness

I've had American III in the car this week and that track is really growing on me. I've been a Johnny Cash fan for years, but my Dad only found out about it when I mentioned it at the time he died (Johnny Cash, not my Dad). Turns out he was the biggest fan ever back in the day, but doesn't listen to music much any more so he went into the attic and dug out all of his original LPs for me. smile

"I Still Miss Someone."

Also, Linda Ronstadt's cover, from back in the day before she sang with orchestras, is remarkable.

Yay, it made the list.

I was thrilled and a little amazed when they asked Joachim Phoenix to name his favorite Cash song, and he wouldn't do it, and they pressed ... and he said "I Still Miss Someone."

"My name is sue, how do you do, now you're gonna die!"
I really love the reaction from those inmates to this song, they're laughing and yelling.
edit: oh yeah, and "Sunday Morning Coming Down" is a beautiful piece.
