Showing my age here, but rediscovered this wonderfully goth album last night and just had to kiss and tell.

Now on a mission to track down other Cure from that era : Pornography and Seventeen Seconds

Is this the best Cure phase?

Jai! I absolute agree. This is the best Cure period.
I have a special love for Pornography, since that was the first album I bought.

Good thread. I have always believed that Faith is The Cure's best album.

Awww, you're way to cute to take your head!

But...I have been a fan of Fat Bob & The Boys for years & years & years & years, so this shows my age, I guess...

To me, they lost their will, jumped the shark, hung it up after Disintegration. I haven't really connected with anything they've done in the last 10-12 years, with the exception of the single "Burn"

Pornography is an awesome album, "Cold" has to be one of the best songs ever, by anyone. Head on the Door, IMO, eeh...OK. Oddly, the song I like best on that one is the most un-Cure like "Night Like This".

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me = Kick Ass, Kick Ass, Kick Ass. Maybe it's because it came out at a very seminal time in my then-young life & became the soundtrack of many lost nights, but I will always love that album.

I'll always have a soft spot for the guys, but put them up against another UK band of the same vintage still pumping out albums: Depeche Mode has kicked the Cure's ass for evolution and creativity for the last 10 years.

i love that era
you gotta go for Boys Dont Cry and Three Imaginary Boys too
a bit poppier and earlier, but still amazing
Seventeen Seconds is probably my favorite Cure album though
however, as far as depressing goes Bloodflowers is up there and also an amazing album

Uh...not to confuse you with the facts or anything, but Depeche Mode has only released two albums in the last ten years, "Exciter" in 2001 and "Ultra" in 1997. These were probably the two worst selling and most poorly reviewed albums of DM's career. I have no idea what sort of kick ass "evolution and creativity" you're talking about, but it didn't show up among the 25 songs on those two weak albums.

but i do agree that they have in no way kicked the cures ass in "evolution and creativity" cause i cant think of many bands that have evolved as much as the cure

Anything by the Cure pre-1994 gets my vote.

Depeche Mode's last good album was "Violator", but I do like a few songs on "Songs of Faith and Devotion". Anything after that was pure crap.

I love the Cure. I bought the b-sides set and it is worth it. Everything through Wish i appreciate. Wild Mood Swings is just bad. Bloodflowers felt too much like going through the motions; maybe if it had come out much earlier it wouldn't have felt out of place. I have many friends that love it and Robert has said that he thinks it is their best album.
I'm looking foward to the next three the signed a contract for. The first one comes out later this year i think.

It's all subjective, but I just think DM has done a better job adapting to "the times". I thought Exciter was great. I bought Bloodflowers, listened to it once, and it's sat in the CD rack ever since.

Maybe it's just that every time I have seen Cure live, it has been horrible. In '87, Robert Smith didn't give a fuck where he was. In '92, it was the same...yeah, we're touring fucking America, we're somewhere in the Midwest, blah...

DM's Exciter tour was excellent. Dave was just ON that night. It was probably the best concert I've been to in the last 10 years.

But, I will still always be a big fan of both bands. I just want to put on a Cure album and be blown away, enjoy it track to track. They, to me, just seem to put a lot of dull, clangy filler songs on their most recent releases.

Oh no no no no no no YOU DONT! Please dont ruin my overjoyed happiness of seeing The Cure live for the first time at Coachella.... *bats her eyeslashes* I have this happy fantasy of being close enough so that Robert and Simon's sweat will drip on me (yeah Im nasty like that)... and I might just cry hearing thier lyrics live... shocked

Was that the Bloodflowers tour? I saw them in June that year, and it would have been great if they hadn't been at an OUTDOOR VENUE. I just couldn't get into them when the sun was shining and people were tossing beach balls around. frown

Yes it was.

My ex girlfriend and I were able to meet them the night before wherein my friend drank out of Perry's beer cup. For weeks after that encounter, my friend frequented “Massage Parlors” that specialized in “Happy Endings”. I blame Perry to this day.

Pornography is the shit. Followed by Disintegration.

Pornography=BOOBIES. How can you NOT like it?
Disintegration IS the best album ever, according to Stan Marsh, anyway.
