Brooklyn’s Liars will be releasing their sophomore effort, We Were Wrong, So We Drowned, for Mute Records on February 24th. The band, since exploding from the New York underground with their exalted 2002 issue, They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top, has been garnering copious amounts of adulation from both fans and the industry alike. Released February 9th, the first single “There’s Always Room On The Broom”, is a fitting title for an concept album based on the German holiday, Walpurgisnacht [Witches’ Sabbath]. The record is about the horror and injustice of the witch hunts and furthers a tale rich in folklore and fairytales regarding the struggle between those thought to be a witch and the scared villagers. It was a a mistyped Google entry that inspired the concept, while the band was recording in vocalist Angus Andrew’s basement with David Sitek. Feel free to attend We Were So Wrong’s CD release party, Tuesday, February 24th at The Warsaw in Brooklyn, with The Chromatics, TV on The Radio and some very special guests. Also, look for them to be on tour starting March 16th.

"I was fascinated by how people buy in to the idea of magic and superstition," remembers Angus. "We told the story from both sides, the villagers who truly believed in these evil witches, and also the poor drowned girls accused of being them. Our house in New Jersey is deep in the forest, away from people and distractions," he continues. "There was very little in the way of outside influence on the album. Once we got stuck on the whole witch theme, we tried to freak ourselves out as much as possible, taking long walks at night through the forest, just trying to get into the right mindset."

I've heard some of the tracks on John Peel's radio show... It's sounding pretty good! A bit slower than their last LP, with a bit more electronica in there too.

I've been listening to this ever since my radio station got a copy. I was surprised by it because it's much more abstract and hypnotic than their first album.

if you look at that cover, and the cover to the yeah yeah yeahs fever to tell, it looks like whom ever made them sat right next to each other in class, if they aren't the same person.

well, they look a little bit alike, anyway.

Yes! Looking forward to it. I'd love to see them again-- they played here a few months ago and it was one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen (in a good way).

Anyone have this album? Anyone as strangely disapointed in it as I am? I knew and had been warned to not expect "they threw us in a trench" part 2, but I was also expecting it to be at least somewhat listenable, I'm still holding out hope that it'll grow on me maybe at least.

After reading the Pitchfork review I'm pretty skeptical. Not that I live and die by their opinions, I'm still going to get it. But I'm prepared to be disapointed. It's totally apropos of those guys to deliberately avoid doing anything even remotely like their last album, though, isn't it? When I saw them play they didn't play a single recognizable song. They flat out refuse to give the audience what they want, and I kind of respect that. But at the same time... if I don't like it and I can't listen to it... then I'm not going to buy it. There's a fine line, I think...

I think their new album will be great. They have changed a great deal leading up this album and if anyone has listened to the singles and ep's that have been released since "they threw us in a trench..." then they should be prepared for this. Everyone should also buy their split with oneida because it is fucking grand.

Ditto on that, everyone should also buy Oneida's Secret War. Oneida don't get the love they deserve.

Yeah I respect them to some extent for now just giving the audience exactly what it wants and working on having an artistic vision and all that, I just wish it was at least a tiny bit more listenable. I'm just hoping for more next time.

i still think it's a lot better than the last album. that one was just so forgettable to me; it was good, but i tired of it really fast. this one is so dense and challenging the first few listens..it makes for good music. it will grow on you if you let it.
