SLAYER, Reign In Blood is the best of the 80's thrash records, by far!
Metallica was good til Cliff died, then they slowly turned to total crap
Megadeth is just awful. A joke from the start. At best they are a gateway band for people who were too timid to jump into the deep end of the thrash pool.
Anthrax... nice guys, great guys, I WANT to like them, but just never found a way to do it.

I lived this thrash thing back in the 80's, I'm not quoting a VH1 history of metal, or some bad article in Rolling Stone magazine, I'm talking from experience.

Metallica was good so I'll consider them classic.
Megadeth was/ more political environmental.

The other 2, eh whatever

Motorhead still rocks (sorry that's not on the list)

I was a huge fan of Metallica when Cliff was still playing, and my great era of Metallica ended with Master of Puppets. And for me, since then, Anthrax is the best!

i would say metallica but only up until the black album because those first 4 albums lit a serious fire under the asses of thrash metal at the time, some of the greatest metal albums ever made.....these days they are just a bunch of winey assholes, so i lost respect a long time ago, they treated fans like shit.

megadeth? dave mustaine was a winey asshole to begin with.

slayer for me was only good for 'reign in blood' and 'seasons of the abyss' any of their recent stuff is ...meh, but i do admire that they are still making metal and have remained pretty true to their roots.

for anthrax i only loved 'persistence of time' i just never got into scott's vocals

On a side note...the new Anthrax is hooky in all the wrong ways...I think Blink 182 produced it.

Since, according the the title of this thread, we are limited to the four choices of Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth, my response will be true to the context of this thread.

Anthrax, well, I could never really get into them. And when they did the "I'm the Man" crap, well that turned me off from even being interested. But to be real fair, since I haven't given them that much of a chance to turn me onto them, I can not really base any decision in regards to comparing them to the other three. So, I will have to refrain from adding them to the comparison, so its down to the big 3.

Metallica have gone way down hill in my opinion. I remember the very first time I heard "Ride the Lightning" and thought they were fucking amazing. I had the honor of seeing them for the Master of Puppets tour with Cliff (opening for Ozzy) and they tore the place down. I saw them the next for the And Justice for All tour. This album was slightly disappointing compared to the previous albums, especially the mix, but still solid songwriting. The Back Album was big, and more defined as to where everyone thought they were heading as far as treading new ground. After that, very forgettable albums. St. Anger was a piece of crap in my opinion, I was actually pissed off after buying that album. So, my interest in them has been rooted in their past.

Megadeth there was this competition between fans, which was fueled very much by Dave's ongoing fued with Lars, so at the beginning I wasn't that much into Megadeth. Though, when Peace Sells came out, I remember really liking it, but in my opinion it kept getting bumped from my record player by Master of Puppets. That's right I said record player, this was 1986. Honestly I never really took that much interest with Megadeth until End Game came out in 2009. And I saw them for the very first time live when they were on tour with Slayer. I recently just purchased their newest release TH1RT3EN and I must say, it kicks the crap out of anything and everything Metallic has put out after Master of Puppets.

Slayer has set a precedent for every thrash band which follows their release of Reign in Blood. The first album I heard of these guys was Show No Mercy, and I was blown away. Especially with Dave Lombardo. I was playing drums at the time so I worshiped him behind the skins. As far as metal drummers in General, Dave is top of the list in my book. As far as their sound over the years, they have evolved and come into their own, but unlike Metallica's evolution, Slayer stayed true to their course and actually release consistently good albums. Now since we are comparing the bands themselves, it would be unfair to include fan contribution (cutting the name into their skin, etc.). That is not the sign of a good band, it's the sign of obsessed fans. which fan obsession has nothing to do with talent. Look at the Justin Beiber craze. huge fan base, no real talent.

My ranking is as follows:
1. Slayer
2. Megadeth
3. Metallica
4. Anthrax

sorry for the detailed post. Just wanted to back up my decision.

Megadeth. Slayer is too one dimensional and Kerry King is extremely overrated as a guitarist. Metallica and Anthrax really only do something for me in small doses on very rare occasions.

As far as thrash is concerned though, these four bands are really just the gateway. I prefer bands like: Invocator(At least their album Excursion Demise), Incubus from Louisiana, early Anacrusis, Death Angel, Ares Kingdom and Protected Illusion. Of course we can't forget Corner either.

This this and always this.

Although i have to say that having seen all the four bands live a few times, Metallica do put on a good show.
