I'm very much into writing stories and drawing comics, but notice that particular music tastes aren't very well suited for creative work (great for drinking and being emo, though)

What's some 'inspiring, but not-over-the-top loudy/war machinish' stuff to listen to while working? Of what do you prefer while you're blogging/crafting/painting/etc.?

'"but not-over-the-top loudy/war machinish' "

P.O.S.'s ablum "Never Better" is perfect for that.

Seeing that this is my job... I typically listen to whatever band I am working for.

But, when I'm just doing my own stuff I tend to listen to NPR. But I recently made a pandora station made up of American Music Club, Calexico, Crooked Fingers, Whiskeytown and that ilk.

Sometimes I don't want to listen to anything with lyrics so I'll throw on Eno of Phillip Glass.

Also, Kraftwerk has been heavy in the rotation lately.

I listen to a lot of Muse, Silverchair and Tool when I write. Certain music is too distracting. So it has to be something that I can block out.

Arvo Pärt; Dianogah; Gillian Welch; Do Make Say Think; Townes Van Zandt; Yann Tiersen; Pelican; Mono

Anyway, usually stuff without vocals/lyrics, but there are obviously exceptions.

lol i dont mind listening to angry music while painting, it gets me amped to keep going! however, maybe something more mellow is better, because it also causes a relatively short attetions span, as when an awesome breakdown comes on, you are required to headbang smile

ANYWAYYSS I've been inspired a lot by Illuminaudio by Chiodos....I'm pretty sure this album is to credit for at least five or six ideas for painting....

also, Craig Owens' (former Chiodos frontman) new band is pretty awesome for creativity too

Like Chuckie, I don't mind the angry, loud stuff when drawing comics and painting, I like to play the noiser of the noise music, or stuff like SUNN O))) (I've been mentioning them here too much!), the Gravetemple Trio or Whitehouse, that doesn't have a drum beat, so you can't tell how much time has passed.
Lately, Weasel Walter's various bands have been on the iPod as I get paint all over my clothes, books and coffee mugs. Or ink on my hands and face.

In college when writing papers I listened to instrumental music. Tortoise, Isotope217, TransAM, and UI, which I could really get into writing when listening to UI.

I write to metal and skate punk most of the time - stuff that's pretty fast and loud. For some reason Metallica has always been the best writing background music. I cannot write to hip hop at all, it's got too many words of its own.

cradle of filth, yeah don't laugh, it relaxes me....

just doing anything "artsy' i need music that is complex, dark and must have atmosphere, something that can create a great visual in my head, not repetitive beat styles of music, classical works well as does more ambient instrumental stuff

When I used to sculpt and paint I would listen to classical music. I don't think I could write/create to any music that has vocals, too distracting.

I challenged myself to paint a large canvas as much as i could while listening to 'Keeping The Blade' by Coheed & Cambria. It went pretty well, very psychedelic painting.

I listen to anything while drawing, but study music is more serious business.

My study music is:
Arcade Fire, AFI and RHCP. Seriously, my boyfriend can't listen to any of those bands anymore.
