squarepusher is a great start. surprisingly enough for being mainly the nine inch nails homestead, nothing records puts out a bunch of good electronica music. it's mainly usa releases of warp uk, but still. there is squarepusher, autecre (probably butchered the spelling on that one), plug, plaid. also check out underworld, tweaker, crystal method.

if you want something electronic but with a nice hard edge.. hit up something like funker vogt, haujobb, velvet acid christ, skold, oghr, skinny puppy, kmfdm(mdfmk), pig, halo black, hellbent... and i'm gonna stop naming bands i like...

OK I HAVE to chime in on this one because I have been waiting for the electronica heads to pop up.

Hmmm?..well it really depends on what type of sounds you are looking for. Asking about which electronic is good is like asking what music with drums is good. Electronic is so wide and varied that for every one of the Sub-genres there are at least 20 or so sub-sub-genres that get lost or forgotten as new sub-sub genres emerge.

To stick to the basics you can start by listening to some of the main styles namely:

House
Trance
Drum n Bass / Jungle
Breaks / Electro
Hardcore
Techno
Down-Tempo

To name just a few.. From there it can go into so many different forms. So if you here one of these that you like you can delve deeper into the sub-genres and probably enjoy those as well. That?s not to say if you like house that you will like all house because there are variety for every listener. For instance:

House ? Funky house, deep house, disco house, hard house, tech house, minimal house
Now close cousins but not exactly the same style could also be styles like:
Broken beat, garage, 2-step garage

Trance ? Hard trance, funky trance, epic trance, psytrance ( I can?t go into trance much cause quite frankly I don?t like it)

Drum n bass / jungle ? 2 similar styles that share the same mother (hardcore) but diverged into very different paths.
There styles range from hard-step, 2-step, dark step, rollers, jump-up, raga, tech-step, hardcore jungle, intelligent, jazzy, neo-funk, samba-step and on and on?.

You get the point about how vary wide of a genre electronic is??..

I can recommend a whole slew of artist but let me ask you what do you listen to now? Are you looking for stuff to dance to or stuff to chill with? Do you want to annoy your neighbors or do you want to hear some wicked evil grooves? Do you plan to smoke some weed to this shit or have sex to it?

Till then I will just give you some of my all time favorites?.

If you want to listen to some Great house check out King Britt, Mark Farina, Julius Papp, Mark E Quark.
As far as jungle goes ? check out John B, Marky, Patife, Marcus Intalex, Photek, Doc Scott, DJ SS, Twisted Individual. There are to many to name? check out www.drumnbassarena.com They will give you the real low down.

Downtempo ? Soulstice, King Kooba, DJ Cam, DJ Shadow, St. Germain, Andy Caldwell, Afro Mystic, Tosca, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Buscemi, DJ Krush, Herbaliser, The Avalanches, Shinju Gomi, Fila Brazilia, Jazzanova

Experimental Electronica ? Kid 606, Boards of Canada, Marumari, Cex, Prefuse-73, Bogdan Raczynski, Squarepusher, Two Lone Swordsman, DMX Crew, Cyclob, u-ziq, Luke Vibert

That?s just to wet your whistle. The world of electronic is VERY VERY wide and varied. Any sound you can think of and any style you can think of has been incorporated in some way into electronica and if it hasn?t give it a second. Let me just point out that many of that artist I listed above cross genres freely so don?t be surprised to here them playing styles you haven?t heard.

Hope that helps more than confuses you but if you ever have any question feel free to shoot them over. Sometimes I feel I know way to much about certain style and yet I have no one that really cares to talk much about it with me. So ask away!!!

No one really cares??? I've been DYING to chat about "electronic" music on SG! My husband (displacer) is releasing his first full length cd on M-tronic (out of Paris), it's kind of IDM'ish, hard to pin down...and one of our best friends just put out his first cd on antzen (he's "l'ombre"), beautiful atmospheric sounds and beats in the tradition of antzen, of course! you can let it all hang out with me, baby! Ah loves muuuuusick!
