Age Old Question....

black flag was best with...

a) Keith Morris on vocals
b) Dez on vocals
c) Rollins on vocals
d) Chavo Pederast
e) no vocals (Black Flag Instrumental)

?

gotta go with Hank personally, with Keith at a close second

D) Even when they had vocalist, I was always more interested in Greg Ginn's psuedo-atonal guitar playing and all the weird, palputating angles Robo and the boys could come up with. That, and their work ethic, is what made Black Flag so influential...

C) Rollins

Definitely.

Now before anyone says anthing, I'm gonna say this: if you don't like any of Black Flag's post-Damaged material, DON'T BLAME ROLLINS! Hank never had any say in songwriting other than lyrics when Greg couldn't come up with any. So if you think they were turned into a "bad metal band", fine, but put the blame sqarely on Ginn, because he was the one writing the fucking riffs while listening to tons of Dio and post-Ozzy Black Sabbath.

Well, I definitely blame Ginn for the sound they veered off into, but Rollins was the worst vocalist that band ever had. I love every other singer they had before he joined, but he really killed it for me. One of the most important aspects of a band (for me) has always been lyrics/vocals, so when Henry took over it went straight downhill for me and then with Greg getting all into lamer and lamer stuff, well, that sure didn't help anything either. Between the two of them they ruined an amazing band. Also, you left out one of the singers, can't forget Chavo Pederast!

I saw them in '84 on the Slip It In Tour and it was easily the most incredible punk show I ever saw (well, maybe tied with The Ramones in '79) they were on fire!
I like all the singers but Hank is tops for me.

I named a software project after that piece.

I forgot to add that even though I think Rollins ruined Black Flag, I still love me some S.O.A., and not just because I hate the kids........anybody who gets that earns 15 points.

hell, i'm a fan of it all - especially rollins and keith, though. rollins is the era i first latched on to (i think hearing my war in junior high is responsible for a lot of who i became) but keith's vocals are so damn energetic and bratty, they're great.

and i actually like ginn's weird, jagged, but simple guitar work. he seems like kind of a prick, though.

Ginn is kind of a control freak from what I understand, but the best thing is what I've seen in interviews with him recently where he totally calls Rollins out on his bullshit. Henry has always played the "poor me" card about how hard his life was when he joined Black Flag, claiming he lived in a shed behind Greg Ginn's family's house, but Greg says it was actually his Dad's office that had it's own A/C and was furnished and all that. I can't remember all the stuff he said about Rollins, but that was one of the things that cracked me up.

Oh, thanx for adding Chavo to the list, Genghis.
I've always liked the story about why Ron Reyes changed his name to Chavo Pederast. Anybody heard it before?

I agree, Greg Ginn made the band. Greg wrote most of the music and lyrics anyway. So the answer is, I dig most Black Flag. On an unrelated note, I love Rollins spoken word and books and Rollins band puts on a great live show, but I would never own any of their albums.. except maybe "Weight".
