It seems I'm seeing more and more (generally established) bands on tour who are advertising their shows this way.
I'm not sure I entirely love this idea (or trend if it's becoming one). If I wanted to hear the record, I'd just put it on. To me, part of the excitement of a live show used to be not knowing exactly what the band would play, and subsequently, being thrilled if they happened to play some of my favorite tunes of theirs.
What do y'all think of this? First off, is anyone else noticing this? Or am I just hallucinating again? And if you're noticing it, do you like the idea?
I've seen Opeth do this a few times, and to me it seems like they're one of the few to pull it off. Then again, I guess I pretty much like any direction that they decide to go in.
I dunno, I think it's cool if they're the kind of band that's really willing to play around with their songs when playing live. Dream Theater's "Live Scenes From New York" is a great album of their tour when they played their "Scenes From a Memory" album, along with an additional 2 hour setlist, in its entirety and it was pretty great. I missed that tour but the album is awesome. Phish had been doing that on several occasions and they were definitely a band that'd change up their songs a lot.
One of the things I really dislike when seeing a band live is when they try really hard to play all of their songs exactly like the album. Why when I can just listen to the record at home?
For me it ruins the feel of a live show a little. I want them to play a little bit of everything, from each album, that definitely makes it more fun... in my opinion, anyway.
