actually, auto tune is awesome. you're all looking at it from only one angle, and that's where it is used to put an effect on the vocal a la 'believe' by cher. as a plug in for a studio for someone working from home, it's pretty damn handy. i'd be lost without it, having recorded some truly shocking bands in my time. yes, there's always the argument that if they can't sing live they shouldn't be in a band, and to an extent i agree, but to sing 100% perfectly in tune is pretty damn difficult. i use it as more of a guideline to aid performance and for that purpose i can't recommend it highly enough

You are the only person who knows what they're talking about in this thread.
It's pretty unlikely that anyone is sick of Autotune in its undetectable (to the average listener) uses. It has become shorthand for manipulated vocoder-esque vocals.
Still can appreciate Zapp & Roger using it though (some of the first to ever use the effect, way before Cher).
Zapp & Roger used a talk box, basically an enclosed speaker with a tube coming out that you stick in your mouth and mouth words to make whatever instrument is plugged into the speaker sound like it's 'talking'.
Autotune is some sort of digital processing software developed in the 90's.
Hehehehehehe, you missed the points. Find me a person that likes auto-tune. It's like finding someone that likes Jay Leno. They don't exist or are too scared to voice their opinion. It was a lame attempt to feel cool.
Other point, is that he is obnoxious every I see him on SG. I set him to ignore after about the fifth time I saw him post, but he just won't go away.
Maybe if he took a stance that everyone did not already agree with and did it in a way that was not an annoying attempt to feel cool, then maybe I'd cut some slack. But no. Sorry I called out the BS. I promise it will happen again.
His next thread will be about how much he hates Limp Bizkit. Or American Idol, maybe even Kenny G!

Great point. You are right. I was wrong on that one. I kind of meant the effect really. Not so much the technology of the action.
wait wait wait... so your saying jay-z DIDN'T kill the auto-tune?!?!? what a liar.
while it's sad to say, i guarantee auto-tune is used on faaarrr more records than people know, in far more subtle amounts. once you've used it a few times you can pick out the keyboard-ish vocals in almost every pop song known to man. that being said, i'll admit to using in more than a few times to help a poor vocal performance, though it's really more like adobo than salt, you gotta really hold back to get it to sound natural/good.

not to reply to my own post, but i've started really enjoying slightly off key vocals from the "old" days. more authentic i guess.
Totally agree with that, THANK YOU!
Older vocal tracks are a lot of fun to listen to! They have such a human quality to them. A perfect example is Girl Groups. The Shangri La's and The Ronettes are very talented, excellent songs and such an enjoyable listen!
I HATE IT!!!! I can't stand how these ho's who can't sing get a record contract... Here is the answer. It just ruins music and Ruins it for GOOD Talent

Not quite the same thing, but I recall hearing a radio interview with George Martin commenting on creating The Beatles LOVE remix, and how they had experimented with "cleaning up" Ringo's tempo variations. They immediately scrapped the idea because the result was soulless, and sounded much like a drum machine.
I have a hard time enjoying mainstream music due to excessive reliance on auto-tune and (especially) dynamic range compression.
very sick of it.. and hate how people seem to think will francis ablum williamcontrol is auto-tuned it is so not.. he's afriend of mine and that boy can do crazy shit with his voice I've heard it person
